This is probably irrelevant but I'm curious. For the USAFA:

435 in Congress, 100 in Senate *5 in a single academy = 2675

Vice President = 5

President = 100

Total = 2780

USAFA enrollment 2010 = 4695

Where did the other 1915 nominations come from?? Can my son apply??

President = 100/year= 400
Children of Deceased/Disabled service members = 65 total
Wash DC = 5
Virgin Islands = 3
Puerto Rico = 6
Guam = 3
American Samoa = 2
Northern Marinara Islands = 2

Now we are up to 3166.

AF enlisted Active duty = 85/year = 340
AF enlisted reserves = 85/year = 340
ROTC = 20/year = 80
Sec AF = 150/year = 600 - this is from nominees who didn't win their district
Superintendent may nominate 50/year = 200

3166 + 1560 = 4726

so, you see if every possible slot was filled they would be over filled.

Your son can certainly apply. He should also apply for all nominations for which he is eligible - at least two US Representatives, US Senator, Vice President.

Thank you for outlining all of that.

Yes, he has applied to Senators, Congressman, VP. I was just hoping there was a secret repository of nominations that could be tapped--like those scholarships for left-handed people. Are the SecAF/Superintendant nominations basically a storehouse of nominations for candidates they want in the AFA but did not receive local nominations? Or is there an application for them?

These equal 3125. Then throw in prior enlisted, prep school, superintendent, etc...

100 United States Senators (5 each). 500
435 United States Representatives (5 each). 2,175
Vice President . 5
District of Columbia . 5
Puerto Rico . 6
American Samoa . 3
Guam . 3
Virgin Islands . 3
Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands . 1

LOL. Sorry.

Yep. No application is required. FWIW some nomination categories are never filled. Normally MOC's will only have 4 at the academy at one time. The service related ones generally are not filled. When that is the case there is a provision to 'fill the class' from those who are alternates or who applied but did not get a congressional nomination.

USNA (and I assume the other SAs) have sources (e.g., the Superintendent, SecNav) who can be the sources for noms but to which you cannot apply. These are typically used to fill the class. There is no use in "worrying" about them as, (1) you cannot apply to them and (2) if you get an appointment, it won't matter to you what your nom source is.

Correct not to worry, esp the Supe nom.
However, it's good to know they exist. This is how a fair number of kids get appointments. It's great to be #1 on your MOC's list. But if you are an alternate then you still will still compete under the Sec nominations.
Sec AF = 150/year = 600 - this is from nominees who didn't win their district
While 150 are allotted each year this number varies depending on how the other categories are filled. When you apply to your MOC you have applied to compete here.

The goal is to get a Nomination by seeking a nomination from all sources that you can.

BTW - the breakout numbers are the same for USNA, USAFA, USMA.
