Gate retiring

I don't think so. The beltway is a pressure cooker, and this position even more so. The fact that he lasted 5 yrs is a long time from a political standpoint.

It will be interesting to see who Obama noms for the position. If I recall correctly didn't Wesley Clark support Obama? Could he be on the short list? (God help us!) Could he ask Powell to come back? Maybe, Lieberman (remember his name was floated if McCain won)? Maybe McCain.

Also, how will the next SOD view troop withdrawal and the military budget. Will he bring back on line things that Gates nixed? Will he tell Petreaus that next summer regardless of the situation on the ground we will start removing troops from Afghanistan? Will he push DADT repeal or will he ignore it?

Flyboy,

I agree, DADT is a big issue, and it will be interesting to see who will enter into this position.

Tpg,

Congrats on your upcoming retirement.

I wonder what will happen to don't ask don't tell.
I don't think anyone can argue that it is anything other than a total failure. All the services are already working on how to properly implement it's repeal.

All services are currently awaiting the comprehensive review co-headed by Gen. Ham and the DOD GC. The repeal is already in the appropriations bill, which is expect to be pass (according to DOD GC who I believe is a political appointee). It's wonderful that the president and Congress put it in a bill and then told the military "clean up the mess of our decision".

One does not even begin to prove that DADT is a failure by resorting to argument by laziness, appeal to anonymous authority, politically reinforced cliché thinking, appeal to supposed widespread belief, argument by politically reinforced repetition, argument by generalization, argument by emotive language, error of fact, or forging a supposed social consensus by parroting unexamined affirmations repeated by others.

Let's hope that the decision-makers aren't engaging in these or any other logical fallacies in conducting their review.

The talk I sat in on (at the request of a PO2 I ran into in the pway) had some very general, often over-generalized political language from a political appointee.

I would not be surprised if the survey results from the services are released, for political arguments, to further they're end of the debate. That's certainly how other high profile things have been done. "Only release the statements that further our cause".
