What is everyone hearing?

I was curious what everyone is hearing from their mids now that everyone is back and getting settled in. We got our first email from DS yesterday with his new PO box. He got his cast off, is now in a brace and wearing a shoe again! Thank goodness for the healing that has taken place! Now my husband and I can "get a life" after being on pins and needles all summer, glued to the internet, searching for any picture we could find of DS and waiting by the phone on Sundays for the call. :thumb:

Just got a phone call from our plebe. Had a few minutes before Hell-o Night (2130 EDT). We've had three emails too. Sounds good. Hates the food. She thinks the meatloaf tonight must be like scrapple (the idea of which she just got introduced to last weekend). Good thing she likes PB&J.

Which begs the question: Where has your daughter been eating up until now - KFC? Taco Bell? Olive Garden?

What - all of a sudden the King Hall food has become of poor quality simply because the Brigade has returned?

Memphis: You may not remember but in2006 The WA Post had a cartoon showing a Mid outside the wall holding a sign..."will serve my country for food!"
There was big dust up over that. Many Firasties ere going w/o meals to make suire the Plebes etc. ate.

I ate food with the mids a couple of years ago.....the food wasn't bad.

That was a shortage of food, though. I didn't get the impression she was saying that her daughter claimed that there was insufficient food, rather, that it was of poor quality. At least, apparently, the meatloaf was bad.

Heck, there is always some meal that you're not going to like. However, I think the consensus of opinion is that the food in King Hall is actually rather good considering they are feeding over 4000 students at once.

Unless it has dramatically changed, I recall thinking that the food was quite good. And that was back in the 70's. Nobody really complained about it. In fact, some of the meals were so good, our only complaint was that we did not have it often enough.

Our Youngster agrees with bowman's mid. She said the food was actually better during the summer when she was there for training. She also had pb&j for dinner tonight. Although she was never a picky eater at all growing up, she really doesn't like the food there. I should say that some of her companymates don't mind the food at all.

Our DS said the food was good and he was lucky for 3 squares a day. The 2 things he did request at PPW was a McDonald's Angus Burger and a night with stuffed crust pizza. I for one was impressed at PPW to visit all the booths that told us what they were serving for the mids, the laundry detail, etc. I can't imagine the amount of services they provide for our students.

It was 2007 and, like most things, there was definitely two sides to this story.

When I complained about the food, my mother (a teacher) would say, "If you're complaining about the food, everything else must be good."

I would reply, "Yeah, except the food!"

Folks, this is the military, not a Paris restaurant. Yes, some food might not be to one's liking. Happened in my day (that HORRIBLE, dry, inedible fried shrimp every Friday night comes to mind), will happen today, and will happen 10 yrs from now. Trust me when I say that, based on my meals in King Hall 6 yrs ago and last year, there are a lot more choices (e.g., salad bar) than in my day and the food wasn't that bad for having to serve 4000+ simultaneously.

Two other things. First, plebes will now be able to go into town on Saturdays and eat what they want. So, at least once a week, they can have their "favorite" meal. Second, many of them will be headed to the USMC, SEALs or other warfare specialties, where MREs are the food du jour. At that point, King Hall will seem like gourmet cuisine!

Yep - hamburger buns smothered in gravy for breakfast and codfish hot dogs for dinner :barf: while some went without food, a results of Fowler's mandatory meal attendance (part of his "secondary, optional and conditional" program) without adequately preparing the food service staff or having adequate food supplies to handle the increase. (Poor planning).

I've heard firsthand reports that it is no longer even close to how bad it was in 2007.

Talked to a few 1/c Mids just last week - food is now is plentiful, and for the most part, palatable at King Hall.

^^^ I agree. Anyone who says there wasn't a food issue back then must not have talked to any current mids (ALL classes). It wasn't just plebes complaining as some always contended, it was a HUGE problem that was finally addressed.

Tell me you didn't like "Big N" steak sandwiches!

They still had those when you were there - didn't they?

From what I understand, the lack of food issue in 2007 boiled down to a failure to communicate. The supply officer ordered food based on what was typically consumed, VADM Fowler required more upperclass attendance at meals increasing the number of mouths to feed. No one had accounted for this when ordering and, apparently, it took a lot of time (too much, probably) to rectify the situation. There was a lot of blame to go around but, that was 3 yrs ago, and I've not heard complaints since.

My USNA's roommate's child attends a large civilian state university, entering sophomore year. #1 complaint is the food.

As long as the food is generally nutritious and sufficient in quantity . . . that's about all you can expect. Parents can send care packages, there is plenty of food to be purchased in the Midstore, plebes can get stuff on WEs -- the situation is not dire by any means. I'm not suggesting the food is great, only that it's not a serious issue provided it is generally nutritious and sufficient in quantity.

Food quality does go down from low demand periods (Sunday mornings, summer programs) to normal weekday meals. It isn't something awful, but it is noticeably better at other times. The lack of food at the beginning of the 07-08 ac year was pretty funny. It just gave some of us a reason to go back to our rooms quicker, bust out the Foreman grill, and deplete the stash of food in the mini fridge.

Not at all. She has said that every time we've talked. This is just the first time we talked about meatloaf. I thought it was funny.

She is NOT a picky eater, either. She has always eaten cafeteria food at school not mention whatever mom & dad put in front of her.

From what DS tells me the food tastes even worse the longer they are there due to its constant repetition. He loves to eat and isn't picky at all, so the food must be really bad.
But then again, I cannot even fathom cooking for 4000+ Mids

DD's issue is that due to construction of the new mess, everything has to be reheated. The various chicken dishes are OK but most other stuff gets dry and tasteless. Once the new kitchens are done (at least a year) things will hopefully improve.

Back on topic...

Got a call today. Said Hell(o) Night was rather comical; 1/2 hour of the upper class ordering the Plebes to do all kind of crazy stuff. "Go get your rack." "Find the 1C who's from TX - and tell them TX is the worst state in the Union." "Sit on this table and sing." Said she wanted to laugh but, of course, could not. The 1C's were busy taking pictures and movies of all the fun. :yllol:

I must admit, MRE's are pretty tasty...I enjoyed living on them for the months after Katrina. But I'm the weird one, for I know of many people who detest the suprises inside of those drab brown bags.

I guess you and I are alike, then. I actually like potted meat and SPAM. And fried bologna? - a delicacy!

During my midshipmen years, I always thought I was being well-fed with good food. Did I like every meal? No. Seriously though - I do not recall any complaining about the food. And they had the best donuts in the world! They are right up there with Krispy Kreme. I don't think they have "Continental Breakfast" anymore, now that they have mandatory breakfast.
