What are the rules regarding wearing uniforms during parent weekend when we are with our candidate? I thought I heard somewhere that they are required to wear uniforms within a certain distance of KP. If we go out to dinner in Great Neck or NYC are they required to wear them or can they wear civilian clothes for a few hours? If required, what are the consequences if they don't wear them?

Thanks for your insight.

They need to be in uniform at all times out in public. The only time they are allowed in civies is when the arrive at thier own home. If you are in Great Neck or NYc A plebe must be in uniform.

Just wondering what would happen if they were not in uniform. Example, if he didn't want to go anywhere and just wanted to stay at the hotel and at the pool? Does he have to wear it there? Is this done on an honor system? Or will there be people out "checking" out the plebes?

Again, unfortunately, who gets chewed out and how badly will be determined by who the head of each company is. I think that needs to changed, because consistency is needed. But generally speaking, if you're caught, you will be called on the carpet for it and it doesn't look good. At the pool, I'm sure you just have to be in the suit. After that when in public you are to be in uniform. Our ds was in uniform his whole plebe year until he came home after recognition and at the end of the school year.

you havent herd about the the kings point fairy? she flys around long island and if a plebe isnt in uniform she forces them to starve ontop of delano hall for weeks on end. come on shutterbug youll kid will be fine.

Haha Terras Irradient, it is not me, it is him that doesn't want to be in uniform. I just wanted to get the facts straight as he (who is still my son and thinks he can still pull the wool over my eyes) will try to probably tell me different.

Call me crazy, but I think your DS/DD should be able to answer the uniform question! They are the plebes at KP not the parents. I'll also bet thats part of Plebe Knowledge?

I was about to say something similar.

Your children know the rules. They know the consequences for breaking them. Let them do what they see fit.

This isn't quite the same as they are going out to rob someone or to do drugs. People need to take a step back a bit and allow your young adult make some decisions. Let them be the lead on these kind of things.

I think you are all missing the point. Our DS took off for Indoc with virtually no other clothes than what he was wearing. Since that day, he has worn only the issued uniforms, etc. We live accross the country from USMMA, so the point is, when we come for a visit, should we bring along some civilian clothes for DS to wear?

NCDSDad, no not missing the point. Read the question Above.

Even if they don't wear them that weekend they should have civilian clothes available to them at the academy for various activities throughout the year. So yes, if all they brought were the clothes on their back, then please bring a couple sets of clothes for them to keep.

They will likely store them somewhere other than their rooms b/c obviously they can't have them there, but they will need civilian clothes for future things.

I remember my DS did not wear his uniform everywhere, and he was OK with that and knew the consequences of his actions.

My 2 Cents....

On this topic I agree 1010% with the two posts by KP2001 - particularly:

"Your children know the rules. They know the consequences for breaking them. Let them do what they see fit."

Parents reading this thread one of the last things your DS/DD needs for you to do on Parents Weekend is question them about the rules and class rates and then if they choose to "interpret" them in a particular manner while out and about on liberty in your company is to disagree with their interpretation.

If how they interpret the rules is deemed to be a violation and they are caught, they may have to live with the consequences. Suffice it to say, if relative to this particular question or rules of similar nature that happens, the result will be they get "stuck" or similar punishments. The consequences are NOT something that should require you to act like a parent and look out for them such as dis-enrollment. That said I'm not suggesting you let them do anything illegal without chiming in, like drink underage, etc - things that do have graver consequences.

If it were me I'd take some civies to a DS/DD who didn't bring any fall or winter clothes since as KP2001 indicates they'll have some other times when they may need/want them between now and Christmas Break.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and the weather is nice, we'll be at the Beach in NJ with Sookie, J-LO and The Situation and that's always better when "It's Sunny In Philadelphia"!

We just finished stowing DS's and several other B-splitters' belongings that didn't make it into the sea lockers before they shipped out last month and ended up coming home with us. It's amazing, when you send them off to Indoc with a duffel bag and a fan, how much they can accumulate over the course of a year.:shake:

My DS likes to wear his mid-length shorts and tees. Is this okay to bring for them to wear when they can wear civies or should it just be long pants (jeans) and button down shirts? And then, how many pairs? One pair of short, jeans, a couple of shirts or tees and a hoodie or what? He did ask for us to bring him clothes but only asked for the mid-length shorts.
Thanks,

Thanks,

Let them be your guide as to what to bring; however, I would include at least one set of "nice" clothes. Something they could wear to a play on broadway type clothes. They'll likely wear their uniform if going to one of those; however, there might be other instances where something similar is needed.

Otherwise bring whatever they ask for. They don't need alot, remember they can't store them in their room anyway.

Sorry guys gotta chime in :)

As stated, your PC knows the rules...if they choose to be out on parents weekend in civilian cloths and get caught, then they will have to take the punishment.

On the flip side, when my son was a Plebe...that first night out in NYC in his uniform was so memorable. The people of NY really thanked him for service, made him feel special. This may be what your student needs to offset some of the bad things that happen during the time from indoc to acceptance weekend. Your PC should be proud to wear the uniform and not look at it as a burden....besides, it should be the whites they wear, which is something they have not worn yet.

My son was thanked when he was filling out forms for entrance to USMMA and felt uncomfortable because he felt he hadn't done anything to deserve the "thanks". As for the uniform and being proud to wear it, he would be proud to wear it. He has just been in a uniform since he was in K-4 and rarely gets to wear civilian clothes. Out of school, his civilian clothes were either soccer uniforms or swimming suits, tees and hoodies. So for him to wear "civilian" clothes is a biggie for him. Just saying.
