I was a proud Mom on Friday as I watched my second one recieve his ring while his proud brother looked on 36 hours after putting his boots on the ground on R&R!

(Darn -- no picture -- not sure what I did wrong...)

Momof2cadets -
How exciting for you and your family!
I enjoyed following the updates of the events all weekend.
The rings are beautiful.
And I've seen those VMI rings.
Congrats to your Firstie!

VMI rings are bigger for the same reason that fat bald middle-age men buy Corvettes. It's called overcompensating.

I do notice that the young guys all want to buy a Corvette and would if only they had the ability to do so but They just haven't reached that level yet.
What I like about the USMA rings is that I can always recognize it at a glance regardless of what class they are in. A guy wearing a class of 60 ring (like my uncle) is wearing a ring that is recognizably the same size and on the top and one side the same design as the class of 80, as the class of 2010. To me that symbolizes continuity with a long line of fellow grads- they still have the individuality of the class but within the larger and longer link to 1802. VMI's ring has abandoned that - they no longer have a class side designed by the class with the "I" side always remaining constant. Instead- the class designs both sides. When they changed that tradition sometime around 1990- they missed the point from my perspective. They always design the Institute side so that it has all kinds of symbolic nods to the 171 years of VMI history but it's not something shared outside the class.

Congratulations to the First Class on getting your rings.

That has been pointed out at my house, too...

Funny story -- right after my son and his wife became engaged we went to a close friend's house for a glass of wine to celebrate. When the hostess asked to see her ring, my daughter-in-law replied "I'm sorry, I am not wearing it tonight", to which my son replied, "She means your engagement ring...". We all laughed until our sides hurt. :thumb:

Very funny!

Without question the rings are highly cherished by the firsties. Our son said the cadets stare in awe at the rings since they are one of the first tangible proofs that graduation is both real and near.

Congratulations to all the firsties, and their incredibly supportive families.
