This is just a curious question. Do the service academies have to follow Title 9?

For those who don't know what Title IX is

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance..."
wikipedia.org

You want to know whether you can keep your Federal FA at a Military Academy?

Yes. Females have the same opportunities as the males.

In the Athletic department, they are members of the NCAA and as such must show they are in compliance with Title IX.

No, the female cadets are sent to work in the mess halls and the laundry plant.

Seriously, I was about to reply with a sarcastic comment too until I saw this and it sufficed. Women have been admitted to the academy for like 40 years...really, its the last place on earth you would expect discrimination of any kind. What are you scared of?

34 years but who's counting?

I meant in terms of how much money the academy spends money on womens verses mens sports. Obviously there is no discrimination, but since there are only about 12% women i didnt think it would apply. or does title 9 only apply to ncaa athletics?

By its express terms, Title IX does NOT apply to the service academies. Nevertheless, USMA and USNA in particular seem to have a good range of offerings of sports given thei relatively small number of women who attend.

applies

Title IX rules apply just as any NCAA rules apply for recruited athletes, etc.

Title IX is pro rata per % female populace of the school.

One thing that is obvious as you explore West Point - male or female, money is spent lavishly for facilities and support of both NCAA Varsity squads as well as club sports. That doesnt even cover the massive intramural sports.

Title IX is a federal law--it is not something mandated by the NCAA. And the text of this federal law, Title IX, says it does not apply to the service academies. That doesn't mean the academies or their voluntary associations cannot voluntarily invest in women's sports to the level that Title IX would require if applicable. Remember also that the academies are subject to political oversight, and gender equity is something considered in the oversight process.

This discussion peaked my interest and I did some research. Rough calculations show that 25% of all women who attend USMA participate in an NCAA sport. Clearly USMA has more men's teams participating in NCAA sports and more money is spent on men's programs. Football's budget alone is more than all combined, but is a revenue sport. I did not spend the time to figure out the percentage men participating but I can safely say that I don't think it is over 25%.

I just want to know why some people care about “diversity” in colleges, honestly I dont care if my school is 100%white or perfectly equal amount of each race. I don’t care. Can somebody just explain that to me, because I am honestly confused?

Whoa! where did the post above me go, with the link about diversity.
