Son just texted that he had a perfect solo today in his Powered Flight class at the Academy. He can now wear the powered flight wings instead of his soaring wings. One very proud dad, here.

Steve,

As far as I know, there is only one set of wings for the powered flight program, and you only get them if you solo. For soaring, everyone gets the plain wings for participating, but if you solo, the wings have a star on them.

If any cadets can can add to that, please do so. I only know the bits of cadet life that I get from DS.

Ahh...

Hmm..."back in the day" we only got the wings if we soloed. But I have noticed a few different wings on trips back to the zoo...

In the soaring program you do not get your wings if you don't solo.

For both soaring and PF the wings are the same. Normal if no solo in either, with star if solo in either.

Is Powered Flight part of the curriculum, an elective, or just something you choose to do on your own at the AFA?

Powered flight is part of the curriculum in the sense that it is an official program operated by USAFA, but it is not mandatory. It is much like jump, soar, space, UAS, etc.

When can you take it and are you selected or just sign up?

If you get 10 flights but don't solo, you get wings. If you solo, you get the star. So if you see a firstie with wings, no you can't tell by looking who did what program.

Powered Flight is a program meant for Firsties although a few 2 digs got to participate last year. It's done over the summer before senior year, or during the year senior year. It runs twice a semester (first 20 lessons, and 2nd 20 lessons). You have to sign up with your ac advisor to get put into the program when there are openings. Over the summer, you have to put in that you want it and be selected.
