Candidate visitation weekend vs. summer seminar

My son received an invitation for a CVW in Oct or Nov. He attended summer seminar and was wondering how different the experience it would be. He would have to miss 2 days of a very heavy load at school and a drill meet for his JROTC unit and he is the commanding officer. Don't want to pass up a good opportunity. Any help is appreciated. Also, that weekend in October is also a home Navy football game. If he goes, would he be allowed to attend the game and how would we get tickets?

I would recommend your son contact his Regional Director about an alternate date for the CVW. The CVW is very different from NASS as it provides an opportunity to experience a short segment of academic year at USNA through a plebe's eyes, as opposed to a setpiece summer camp. The CVW is especially important if your son has any questions or concerns about the Naval Academy from the academic perspective. It will provide him an opportunity to get a more realistic perspective of USNA. As with any of the visitation opportunities, the candidates need to avoid participating with rose-colored glasses on.
Also, be aware that parents who are able to accompany their candidates/prospects will have access to briefings and tours at USNA.

You may want to see if it's even a possibility before making any decisions. A lot of other people on these boards were told by admissions that those weekends are already full. My son RSVP'd 2 weeks ago (Sept 1) and it sounds like people calling much after that are being told there isn't space left. Of course this may vary by region, qualifications, etc. like everything else!
 
Have to go with 1964 on this. CVW is totally different than NASS. Contact your BGO and or Regional Director and ask for a date change. They can sometimes accommodate. We switched one because of sport commitment although it was about zero degrees in February when we finally got it. Much different than NASS. Was the deal breaker for USNA. Tickets as above.
 
Left out?

I have been told I am a strong candidate and have received an e-mail saying I was on a "very short list of candidates" and encouraged to get my application completed, but I was turned down for NASS and I haven't been invited to any candiate weekends. That's a bit discouraging. Perhaps the fact that I live in Maryland is part of the reason, but a friend of mine was invited to a weekend. Any thoughts?
 
Contact your BGO and ask He/She to contact Admissions. My daughter was a strong candidate with a LOA and not invited for CVW but her BGO got her in after she requested a weekend.

"Booked" ain't always true. One thousand 4/C with someone to skate for a weekend with a Drag in their room and I think they will all volunteer. Keep trying and it will probably happen. :thumb:
 
My current Mid attended a CVW in April ('08) which was during his HS Springbreak( he requested that particular date due to travel distance from USNA).....we actually took the whole week to tour several other East coast universities that he had applied to...CVW was a big eye-opener for him (he had attended NASS)...plebes told him exactly how they felt....the good....bad and ALL the ugly.
We feel the CVW helped with his making a final "informed" decision on attending USNA and was very worthwhile :thumb:.
 
If you can, as a parent, you should try to go with your son or daughter to a CVW. We flew a long way last year to visit the USNA with our son and took our high school freshman daughter. It was worth every penny. It was a very good experience. From a historic point of view, it is a place filled with interesting information. Once our son was off to stay with the mids in the dorm, we attended parent sessions, toured classrooms, shopped in the Midstore (my MOST favorite place to go!), toured the Yard, ate at the Dry Dock, went to DTA and had a great time. We also took in a Navy game in which I ordered tickets ahead of time and picked up at the ticket office on the yard. Don't miss the opportunity if you can go. It made up my son's mind that he was in the right place and he even wrote today that as a new Mid he is seeing the visitors coming in this week. It was a great experience for him.
 
I went to the Summer Seminar before I got here and I enjoyed it but I don't feel it gave a very true look into a plebe life. I didn't do a CVW personally but after seeing them this weekend, I feel that they provide a more accurate look into the daily life of a Plebe.
 
Can anyone give me an idea of the itinerary for CVW? I mainly just want to know arrival/departure times. My daughter will be attending in November and we are trying to make travel arrangements. Have not received any info other than the invitation letter and an email confirming she is in for that date. Thanks!
 
CVW timing

My daughter just came home from the junior CVW this past weekend. A few items we learned about the logistics of the trip:
You can get to the yard early and leave your stuff in the auditorium where they meet, then you'll have a chance to look around.
BWI is the very best way to fly into that area, we came from FL and everything was on time or ahead of schedule (SWA was big part of that)
If you do not drive or cannot rent a car, the Supershuttle will get you there - door to door. About $80 round trip, but it's cheaper than a taxi...
There is NO direct public transportation between BWI and the Academy, it was discontinued in July.
My DD flew in and was there two hours early and left about six hours after they ended the weekend. Everyone was helpful, concerned and made sure that she knew where to go, eat, etc....
Easy weekend visit and she gained a lot from it. Only downside was going back to school today...

CVW timing pt 2

Almost forgot, they will send you a letter describing the bare bones of the schedule. It isn't much to go on as your child's experience will be dictated by what their plebe does as much as anything. Once your daughter is with the group a 5:15 on Thursday, they will be fine until 11:30am on Saturday.
Also, bring treats for her plebe (we brought about three dozen cookies) it will break the ice very quickly with everyone in her plebe's company.

Sorry RelevantO, my daughter had no idea the demand for sugar in Bancroft that night. Strangely enough, the plebes were so polite to each other that there were a few left the next day. My sloppy piggish self would have made sure that the tin was clean by lights out. Maybe that's why I never went....
