Credit check?

Does the Naval Academy check your credit as part of the background check?

I doubt most 17-yr-olds have a credit history, so for most people it's a moot point. In order to stay at USNA, you must be able to obtain a security clearance. That's where it could well come into play.

I've never heard that a credit check is done as a condition of admission but, once they have your SSN, it's easy enough to do.

Actually, that would be illegal - not for USNA or the Government really but for private industry to track us or anything by SSN, so what they'd really need is your personal taxpayer ID number which by "amazing" coincidence is the same number.

All this in spite of the fact that when Social Security was "invented" and the number implemented by legislation, then President FDR and numerous members of Congress who advocated the legislation swore such things would never happen. Of course of the Founding Fathers who were "Big Government Federalists" like Hamilton and the other authors of the Federalist Papers, one might wonder what they would think of such things as the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Labor so I guess the one truth in life is change in inevitable.

However, if one 17 or otherwise, has been passing bad checks? That'll deter an appointment fairly quickly and that comes out in the criminal background check all appointees must complete.

Credit Check...

Although I agree that a 17 year old with credit problems should probably not be admitted to the USNA, the fact remains that many many people have their credit stolen every year. Once you are "on" to the scam it can takes YEARS to correct.

Also, no one's SS# is safe if a talented and resourceful crook gets it. That includes young adults, children and babies....

That's a very good point. I read this article awhile back about this guy who was about 16 was applying for his driver's license and found out someone got his number and totally destroyed his credit.
