I think this story is a couple years old or so if I remember correctly, but didn't get huge play.

Never forget the rescue swimmers and the old time red berets of the Air Force. Before 9/11 we used to do a tour with the kids every year at Cherry Point. One year the tour was of the standby rescue helicopter. The command pilot introduced us to his rescue swimmer who had just recieved a decoration for pulling two pilots out of the water off Carolina. This kid was from Chicago and had never even seen the ocean. His first year he swam like a stone and was disqualified. He spent a year at the YMCA learning to swim and tried out again. Made the qualifications and became a rescue swimmer. Dedication, You Bet. Cherry Point used to provide Life Star for all hospitals in eastern North Carolina and I think they still do free of charge.
