How to send e-mail to USMA cadet?

Hi!

One of my former "candidates" is a plebe at USMA and I wanted to send her an e-mail before the USAFA v USMA game! :biggrin:

I know her full name...how would I send her an e-mail? I think, truthfully, she'd get a big laugh out of it!

Generally it's firstname.lastname@usma.edu

However, if she has a common name there may be a middle initial involved.
 
firstname.lastname@usma.edu

EX. Cadet John Smith would have an email address of:
John.Smith@usma.edu

Tricky thing though is if:
1) there is more than one John Smith
or
2) If John Smith's full name is David John Smith then his email would be David.Smith@usma.edu. But if there is another David Smith, then I don't know what it would be!

So they use the standard ".MIL" type method...USAFA actually puts the class year in front so I was....curious.

Quick follow-up to you all!

Right after the game, I received an e-mail from my former candidate!! :thumb:

She said a lot but the part that really hit home (nicely) with me was this...and YES, I'm an AF guy posting this in the USMA forum...because it says a LOT:

"As I’m sure you know well, West Point life keeps me pretty busy. In addition to going to classes and keeping up with school work, I’m on the...(cut a lot out to keep her anonymous) I’ve made a lot of great friends and am having a great time. I’ve already survived the infamous Military Movements (“gymnastics”) pe class and somehow managed to tab the ioct! As great as the Air Force and Air Force Academy are, I really believe this is the right place for me.

It is SO nice to see a young cadet or mid say that!!! :yay:

And I will say this...USMA convinced HER at SLS. She was 100% USAFA but the cadets/officers/NCO's she met in SLS just clicked with her. Ya'll got one heckuva great cadet there.

Of course, we ALL get incredible cadets and midshipmen! That's what keeps all of us involved in this.

Now...will somebody explain to this AF flyer what it means to "tab the ioct?" :biggrin:

IOCT - Indoor Obstacle Course Test
IOTC Tab : The IOCT is a timed test and to 'tab' means that she ran the IOTC at an A- time or better.

The IOCT is the indoor obstacle course test. It is, no sh*t, no lie, the hardest physical event I have ever done. It is diabolically designed to crush you. I don't know what a**hole developed it, but honest-to-jesus if you mention the IOCT to a grad he/she will no doubt cringe or look wistfully skyward and give thanks to heaven that he/she did not literally pass out. The time standard for the test is something awful, like 3 minutes.

This is a great video made recently of some of the Wounded Warrior Transition Unit guys at West Point taking the IOTC. My firstie son said the cadets were told to be there, and admitted that he saw it as just something else to eat up his time. He said it turned out to be one of the most inspiring things he has ever seen -- don't think there will be too much complaining about the dreaded IOTC this year...

Okay...I'm going to agree with Scout here...that is an insane test of pain and suffering in the worst way! :wow:

Does everyone have to do the IOTC? I thought the APFT was the test everyone took.

You only take it twice now, during Plebe and Cow year. Plebe year it will be as part of your military movement class (you do it almost every day unless you tab it and the highest score is recorded). Cow year you will take it for a physical grade (worth more than an APFT). Also, it is a graduation requirement (the one during cow year is the one that counts towards this).

Ah, that's a nice respite. Once upon a time, it was twice. Plebe year and Firstie year. It was a grad requirement. My Yuk year, the Supe decided it would be a 4-year event. So we got to do it all 4 times. I still hold that against him.
