Is it best to apply for AROTC/NROTC scholarship first and then the schools on your list? Or should you apply to the schools first?

DS is just starting on these applications, he is a senior and has also applied to USNA and USMA. If you receive an ROTC scholarship, you have 30 to accept the offer. What happens, if for example, you accept an AROTC scholarship and then after that you receive an appointment to a SA? I understand that an appointment to USMA trumps the AROTC, but what if the appointment is to another service academy?

You have 30 days to accept the scholarship, but you don't actually contract in until your second year.

So basically you can get into every SA and ROTC (oh how nice that would be), but you can deny all of them, even after you accept the offers.

Apply to ROTC and colleges as soon as applications are available.

DS had all 3 ROTC scholarships to 3 different schools, USNA appointment, and 2 acceptances with full rides to civilian schools. Accepted everything and did not secure deposits on acceptances to schools until he narrowed down his choices. (these usually aren't due until May)

Once USNA appointment arrived in March and he decided to accept it, he gave back the AROTC and AFROTC scholarships and one of the civilian scholarships, and contacted those schools.

Sometime between April and July he decided to finally say no to the second civilian scholarship and school.

He contacted NROTC officer at accepted university and explained the situation. He held onto that scholarship and school until Induction day and then we sent the letters out declining the NROTC scholarship and admittance to the university.

In every case, the schools he passed on due to USNA acceptance he received a letter from the Dean of Admissions congratulating him on his decision to go to USNA and requesting that he contact them if he changes his mind anytime during his college career.

In addition, the AROTC LTCOL requested that DS contact him if his plans changed and he needed assistance with AROTC or the university to re-enroll.

Moral of the story: Accept Everything....decide once you have all your cards on the table.

But, once you have made your decision, give back the scholarships so others can take advantage of them.

This is sorta misleading.
1)I think some of the SA appointments are binding.
2)You can accept a ROTC scholarship and then turn it down later on.(Even if you just decide you want to do something else with your life)
3)Contracting... 4-yr scholarship winners contract once they pass all the stuff needed. (APFT, DODMERB, etc) This generally happens fall of Freshman year.
However, 4-yr scholarshipers can walk away from ROTC after a year with no commitments as long as they have not started their sophomore year. As for In-College scholarships if they have the same thing... As for non-scholarship cadets, you must contract by the beginning of your junior year.

Thanks everyone! Time for DS to get busy and get these applications done. Kudos singaporemom and son! I know that was a lot of hard work and it certainly paid off :thumb:
