The afternoon of December 1st is Service Selection Notification for the Firsty's in the class of 2011. It's one of the most anticipated days in the career of a Midshipman. While many have a good idea that they will get their first selection, stress levels have been building for the past couple of weeks. Tomorrow will be a day of joy for many and a day for disapointment for a few. Wanted to wish 2011 the best.

I've been wanting to know the answer to this question for some time now: How hard is it to get accepted into Subs?

My job was to hunt subs from the air, so I was not in the nuclear power community. However, I just returned from a trip to USNA and confirmed that with the PRK corrective eye surgery now opening up more opportunities for mids (aviation, special ops, etc.), they are now having to "draft" mids to go subs. If you have good grades and have a desire to go subs, then you have a good chance of getting it. In your senior year at USNA you must also pass an interview with the Director of Naval Reactors office in Washington D.C.

Service selection is the culmination of a 3 year process. You will have exposure to all the various communities but if you have a spacific interest then you will concentrate your exposure to that community. For subs you will gravitate twards summer training assignments that place you on a sub cruise. Also, you will have quaifiers for various communities along the way. It's a 2 way steet you got to want them but they have to want you as well.

Just got the word, Marine Ground!!!!

As a parent it does not get any better. It's been her dream and goal to be a Marine since she was 12 years old. It's an amazing experience to wach your child set goals and work their way through the wickets of life and achive the goals they dreamed of as children. Today is a very good day for our family.

Congrats MIDNDAD!! That community is on my 3/C mids radar as well! :thumb:

Congrats MIDNDAD and to your DD as well! I know you must be amazingly proud and deservedly so! You will have some extra celebrating to do this Christmas!

With tears still streaming down my face, I echo MIDNDAD. Indeed a day that is etched in my heart. Age 3, "I want to go to Navy like Daddy!" Age 5, 'Rain Man' of all things aviation, Age 21, Single worded text, PILOT.

Congratulations MIDNDAD and Breadcrumbs! Exciting days ahead! Enjoy the Christmas break with your family.

That IS damn good news! If you can, ask how many pilot slots overall were given out this year, please.

Again, congrats to the whole family.

Congratulations to you as well!

We got that same short text as the only communications today. Think they may be busy celebrating in some Annapolis bar at the moment?
