Questions Thread

I would guess that you would be able to have your family visit you during plebe year to encourage you and to bring you stuff. Also, as a Firstie you might be able to drive home but have to come back that same day (Not too sure about this one). Where do you live? I live in NYC.

Plus, a little off-topic, but did you hear back from MOC yet re: nominations? Scheduled interviews with Schumer and Gillibrand, but waiting on local congresswoman for decision, and don't know if I'm behind the 8-ball or not on this.

To tell you the truth, I did not apply for nominations from the NY senators, so I can't help you there. I applied to my congresswoman and got my nomination a while ago and my appointment more then a month ago.

I'm sure it has been answered at some point on this message board, but I looked and couldn't find it. Is smoking allowed for plebes? I don't smoke cigarettes, but I do smoke cigars and a pipe when I get the chance. And I know a ton of people at the Academy dip.

Yes, Plebes can smoke.

Yes, Plebes can smoke.

But it wouldn't be very helpful for the APFT 2-Mile run.

My advice, as unprofessional as it may be, drop it before you even think of applying. You'll do yourself a favor in both the CFA and APFT.

I've had conversations with a friend of mine who is a member of the class of 2014 on this very subject. While I am not a smoker and he really isn't either, he says that he and some of his friends when they have some time off on the weekends will smoke some cigars just as a celebratory thing and to blow off steam.

Is smoking possibly frowned upon even though it's allowed?

Not really. I mean, it is expected that Plebes get cigars for their tables for the Xmas dinner and everyone smokes them out on the apron afterwards.

I see a lot of people smoking, so i would say that it's seen about the same as it is in the civilian world.

At least where I am from smoking is pretty darn frowned upon, but ill assume most cadets aren’t smoking cigarettes regularly by what people have said.

There are a fair amount of cigarette smokers here, as hard as it is to believe. I hate it when they come in from smoking- they stink up the barracks. Cigars on special occasions is common, and often used more for bonding like on Christmas dinner. The biggest thing here is chewing tobacco. It's nasty, and a lot of the male cadets spit into Gatorade bottles. Nothing is worse than doing plebe trash duty and having a not-closed dip spit bottle spill.

Um, this is kind of a question for the girl cadets, so I hope it doesn't bother any of the guys. I was just wondering if girls were required to wear tampons at West Point or during Beast. I hate tampons, they're a huge pain to use IMO, so I was hoping we could wear pads instead.

Try messaging some of the girls on here. vampsoul is a plebe there now.

TMI IMHO

I am pretty sure they aren't going to inspect you...just saying.

If it works, it works. One may be more convenient/effective than the other but I wouldn't know what to tell you in that regard.

Thanks, that was worrying me...though now I'm wondering how exactly I thought they would enforce that requirement...

The College Confidential site has what I'm told is a pretty good Girls Guide to West Point. And last year one of the female cadets suggested here that starting birth control - calm down, dads, not for the purpose of birth control- well before Beast can make life a lot more convenient in the field.

And if any girls have questions, feel free to send them my way. For those of you who may not know, I am a female plebe at USMA.
