NROTC or Military Prep School

Hey guys, quick question. I am currently a senior in high school and I am curious about NROTC.

Is NROTC a nomination source for USNA? If you get a nomination from your CO at college, does that substitute for your congressional nomination? And if so, how does someone get a nomination from a CO?

Secondly, in regards to Military Prep School, I am not talking about NAPS. I am talking about colleges like Virginia Military Institute, New Mexico Military Institute, The Citadel etc. If you attend one of these schools, are you more likely to be accepted than a student that attends an NROTC school? Can you get a nomination from the Military institute (because they are NROTC schools themselves correct?)

Thanks

I currently go to Northwestern Preparatory School which is a foundation school sponsored by USNA and although I can't tell you it'll make you more competitive for admission than a ROTC program, I can tell you that nearly everyone that comes here is at the academy of their choice the following year. Check it out online at nwprep.org. I couldn't be happier with coming here over other prep schools like New Mexico or Valley Forge.

Northwestern is a very cool, special place for those determined to get to an Academy.

Sorry, no. JROTC, yes, but not ROTC.

Where you go is less important than how well you do. If you think you need additional academic help/preparation, a prep school like NMMI and various others may be useful. If you were already well qualified but fell into that group of candidates who were triple Q'ed but didn't get an appointment, you're probably better off going to the college of your choice.

You should go to VMI b/c that's where you want to go, NOT b/c you think it will help you get into USNA.

Neither VMI nor prep schools have appointment slots. You compete for noms with everyone else.

Actually usna1985, the CO of an NROTC unit in college can nominate up to 3 individuals to the Academy. I know this because I've been talking with a Lieutenant at my unit about securing one if I don't get a nom from a MOC.

Nominations are available for NROTC MIDN. They do not substitute for a Congressional Nomination but would be another source in addition to a MOC nomination. Therefore, even if you secure a NROTC nomination you should still apply to all of your MOC's for a nomination.

VMI and The Citadel are not a military prep school. NMMI, Valley Forge and Marion Military are all Military junior colleges with service academy prep programs. There are also a couple of others that I would have to look up.

I would caution anyone who is not sponsored by the Foundation to attend a SAP program thinking they will be a shoe-in for an appointment.

JAM is right, apply to all the nominating sources you can! Because I've read on this forum multiple times that there are a limited number of appointments for (J)ROTC nominations, so it would be in your best interest to try for a nom from a MOC as well.

This is what happens when I post when I'm tired and don't double check my facts. I make errors that I shouldn't make. Thanks to those who are correcting me.:thumb:
