This is out of the blue, but how many triple qualified candidates usually receive a nomination? I'm triple qualified for USNA and was wondering of that benefitted upwards receiving a nomination.

In the past, the number is about 2/3 in that roughly 2/3 of candidates who end up being triple Q'ed get noms. However, that number comes in hindsight. Here's what I mean.

First, Pres noms are non-competitive. If you are eligible for one, you get one. Thus, you can get a Pres nom without being 1 Q'ed, 2 Q'ed, or 3 Q'ed. You can get one before you complete your packet. So, there can be many Pres nominees who are not 3Q'ed.

Second, please understand that, at the time the MOCs are selecting candidates for noms, many candidates haven't completed their packets. Thus, the MOCs may not know whether their choices will end up beign triple Q'ed. Some (with LOAs or otherwise) may be known to be scholastically qualified, but may not have taken their CFA and/or their medical may not be complete or resolved.

Finally, some candidates who don't get noms may drop out of the process. IOW, they may have completed 50% of their USNA packet at the time nom decisions are made by the MOCs. If they don't get a nom, they may lose interest and not complete the packet -- and they may have been triple Q'ed had they finished everything.

Thus, at the end of the process, about 2/3 of those who complete their applicatons and are triple Q'ed receive noms. However, there are those who get noms who aren't triple Q'ed, etc. It's not an exact comparison, so to speak.

Appointments

Great info...what would be the percentages for those triple Q'ed with a nomination getting an offer of appointment??
DS is triple Q'ed with Presidential and MOC nom....as you might expect he (we!) is very anxious...

70%-75%

I'm 3Q/D and have a Presidential nomination, what else can I do to obtain a letter of appointment?

if you have an loa?

So sure, there are triple qualified candidates.
but what about people who have an loa?
I have an interview with a ny senator coming up, (actually, tomorrow) but i am really curious about what is the percentage of kids who have a loa whom go on to receive a nomination
Sorry for changing the topic!

If you have an interview coming up shortly, I would be more focused on what they are likely to ask you and how you will reply. Statistics/percentages about those things you are asking really don't matter to where you currently are in the process. Several other older threads on here address the MOC interview expectations, that is where I would be focusing my effort.

I just found out I did not receive a nom to Navy, my first choice I am 3 Q'ed had a great great B&G interview, etc, etc, etc. However, I did receive nom to my 2nd choice, however, I did not have a great interview and do not believe I will be most competative. The MOC I interviewed with lost election. I can reapply next year to new MOC and hope for the best.

PeterMCD: One thing you can do to improve your selection chance is to keep your file updated with your latest accomplishments be they in the classroom, athletic field, or your ECAs in school or community. It is your job to keep your file up to date so that it depicts you in the best light.
Rob: I wouldn't write off your chances at your second choice this early in the game. Make your best effort to be successful, and you just may be.
Best wishes to both of you.

Any thoughts on the odds for a 3q recruited athlete with a presidential? DD has been told that she might have to wait until January for her appointment. Thought this was a lay-up but the process has dragged on for almost 2 months now and she has passed on some sure things based on what the coaches have told her.

It is better to start a new thread then to tack onto one from 6 yrs ago..................USNA no longer routinely tells applicants if they are 3Q so what might have been valid 6 yrs may not necessarily be current practice.

Recruited for a SA can have a wide scope/meaning. I was "recruited" to play a sport, but I certainly was not the best athlete being looked at. Ultimately, I did not receive an appointment my H.S. senior year. I would caution against viewing being "recruited" as an automatic appointment card...it certainly is NOT the case. I am not sure who told your DD that she was 3Q'd (presume it was the coach?) or for how long...but if it has been for a while (i.e. ~1.5+ months), then it really re-emphasizes the point above...otherwise, barring an unexplained delay or processing issue, an appointment would have been offered. Bottom line, I would not view this process as a "lay up" for any "recruited" athlete and it is practically impossible for anyone to give you odds.

Majordad, I agree with unsabgo08 on this. Been following your posts and know your DD has been waiting for an appointment for a few weeks. As someone who was a recruited athlete at USNA and many other schools and also got the chance to spend a few months working in the basketball offices with recruits, the range of being recruiting can vary greatly. Coaches also can be vague on the level of interests because of many factors. This is all a part of the recruiting world which can range from feeling like a rock star to down right feel like you are being lied to and left without a date on prom night. Bottom line, if she was high enough on the coaches wanted list, it would have happened. I obviously have zero clue to the details and don't need them, just speaking in generalities. Your DD should do what is best for her. I tell that to all recruited athletes. I also tell all SA recruited athletes to envision their future at a SA without a sport. The reality is many don't play for 4 years because of a variety of reasons. Most sports have an attrition rate of 50% or more. If USNA is where she wants to be next year, tell her to hang in there, but other opportunities can pass by. She needs to do what is in her best interests, not the schools.

I haven't looked at my DS's portal, but does it list somewhere in there showing whether a candidate is 3Q? I assume since his DoDMERB is good and he's qualified, he hasn't been asked to retake the CFA, and the fact he has decent SAT scores (1360) and GPA that he is 3Q? He just got a nomination to the USAFA from our junior Senator, but we are waiting to see if the senior Senator or congressman noms him for the USNA.

No. USNA will not tell a candidate if they are scholastically qualified. They will know medical and CFA qual. Some candidates are told by a coach and/or BGO which is not allowed. BGOs request to not be asked this question as it's not their place to answer. The scholastic Q has a variety of factors in it.

That is what I thought. Thanks. We'll just keep our fingers crossed and see what happens in the next few months.

I only know what the coaches said. They told her she was a top recruit. Based on her times, she'd be at the top of their depth chart. They text her weekly telling her that there were a lot of applications from our area, whatever that means and to be patient. She doesn't feel right asking a coach to support her ED application and then back out if she gets an appointment, so she has told her top civilian school that she is passing.

She had her heart set on Navy but if they don't want her, USMA would assuming they'd like to stop losing to Navy!

It sounds like she is a strong recruit. Did she receive a recruiting trip (not a CVW, but athletic trip paid by the school)? The coaches only have so many 'blue chip' spots. They may think she has a strong enough application without using one of the blue chips on her. This is an approach many of the coaches use for recruiting at a SA. Not trying to shatter dreams or anything on here, just give reality to the whole athletic recruitment thing at a SA. What your DD did is what many, including myself, did while waiting for appointments from a SA. Understand she wants to do the right thing. Now that I have seen the process from the inside out, she needs to what is right for her. Coaches are doing what is best for them in the cut throat business of recruiting. The minute someone better than her says yes, a coach has no shame in not offering or pulling one if not committed. There is nothing wrong with a kid watching out for her best interest.
