Our child wants to attend the Naval Academy. We recently learned that he has HSV (herpes). Can someone explain if this is a disqualifier, or what it takes to get a waiver? It would be hard to believe that none of the 4k mids have herpes so I hope that this will not be a problem.

Hi Rower, ther is a discussion tab here for DODMerb, I think you'll get a faster response if you were to cut and paste your question there. Good luck, I hope you get the answer you want.

You really need to correspond with Larry Mullen in DoDMERB on this.

Just a fellow parent here, but recognize that the answer may vary depending on the type of HSV, etc.

HSV-1 is the virus that causes cold sores, and is quite prevalent. Studies indicate that by adolescence, 62% of Americans are infected with HSV-1, and by the time people are in their 60s, up to 85% have been infected. World-wide the figures are even higher.

HSV-2 is significantly different.

In any case, the issue needs to be worked directly with DoDMERB. Theirs is the only answer that matters!

Oops, forgot the second stat:

HSV-2 is significantly different.
Per the CDC, Nationwide, 16.2%, or about one out of six, people 14 to 49 years of age have HSV-2 infection. Since it can be latent, many do not even know they are infected!

In any case, have the discussion with DoDMERB
