How heavily are AP test scores weighed in the admissions process? I'm currently in 3 AP classes. Just wondering how much weight is put on my scores.

Thanks,

AP classes or test scores?

just taking AP classes help ROTC scholarship chances. I don't think the AP test scores are figured into this. There was a link posted a few days ago of the ROTC scholarship scoring process...

Not sure where Wisconsin is getting his info but according to the Regional Director who visited our home, the number of AP classes my Plebe was/had taken did indeed get noticed.

It contributes to one of the fundamentals of getting in: take the most challenging curriculum your school offers and excel.

Also heard the same for USMA (in addition to ROTC scholarship process).

The quantity of AP courses is important; USNA looks for rigorous academics. My DS took a lot of APs in high school - 1 as a sophomore (actually counted as 2 since it was AP Biology + lab), 3 as a junior, and 6 as a senior. As part of the online application, you are asked to list the courses you will be taking your senior year, and that is how they will know what you have taken (until they receive your high school transcript). USNA will not know the results of your senior AP tests until long after you have been accepted, and most likely won't get them until after Plebe Summer starts. My son's arrived about two weeks after I-Day.

The value of a high score on the AP exams comes into play during Plebe Summer when you have the potential to validate (be exempt from) certain courses. A 4 or 5 on an AP exam might mean you do not have to take the entry-level course that others are required to take. There is a page on the USNA website that tells you what your AP score needs to be in a particular subject in order to validate a class. However, you also have to take a validation test during Plebe Summer in order to validate certain classes. They want to make sure that you still know the material!

Not sure what question you're reading but he asked about his AP exam scores, not number of AP courses.

The answer to the question is still not much.

That being said, is there any reason not to do your best on those tests?

If you don't get into the academy you can get a good amount of college credits for good scores on the tests. I entered with 41 credits (junior status here) so I was able to register for my classes sooner than everybody else.

As far as I know, USNA accepts very few AP tests, but you have to take their own validation tests to skip courses.

Most colleges do not use AP test scores for admissions, but rather for placement.

The AP scores do not get factored in, it's all about your grade in the class, and the fact that you took the class. Take a challenging curriculum but you still have to do well in your classes. You don't want to get 70s in an AP class.

Scores don't really do much either. I know a lot of people who had high AP scores and got no validations from the AP scores.
