I received a senate nomination and a congressional alternate nomination to the United States Airforce Academy. I am academically qualified with an excellent record of extra curriculars. I am also physically very fit. I have been preparing for entry to the Air Force Academy for years now.

I just received the results of the DoDMERB and they medically disqualified me stating that my vision is not correctable to 20/20 in both eyes and I have an astigmatism in one eye. However, they stated that I am eligible for a medical waiver.

My question is how difficult is it to receive a medical waiver? I do not plan on becoming a pilot I am interested in nuclear physics and scientific research. How are my chances for receiving a waiver? My vision isn't that bad, I am correctable to close to 20/20 like perhaps 20/30. Can someone please offer me some advice, I am really concerned - I have worked so hard up to this point.

My advice is contact Mr. Mullen before anything else. He is on the DoDMERB section of this forum very often, and is invaluable when it comes to things like this!

Also aren’t astigmatisms usually correctable? I have a slight one, I hope it isn’t a DQ, because I want to be a CRO, and with vision issues that will be more difficult I am guessing.

No, your question is "how difficult is it for YOU to receive a medical waiver."

We all have anecdotal stories that can confirm someone else who received a waiver for that exact same condition, and we can also tell you about another person who was denied a waiver for the exact same condition.

None of our stories matter. Not one bit.

However, there is one man here who can help you.

Contact him ASAP.
 
I think it's odd that DoDMERB is disqualifying you solely on your vision...but w/e. My vision is probably a lot worse than yours and I didn't get a single notice about it. I also have astigmatism.

The key may be that it is "not correctable to 20/20". Lots of people have bad vision but they are correctable to 20/20 with contacts or glasses.
