I recently heard back from the Coast Guard Academy, informing me that I had been deferred from EA group 1. :frown:

I am already going to submit my semester grades, but is there anything else I can do to improve my chances of being accepted in Regular Decision?

  • Updated grades
  • New standardized test scores
  • New letters of recommendation
  • New awards (academic, leadership, or sports)
  • Admissions interview

How to update application

My son is in EA2. This is my first time posting on this forum. I hope you don't mind all the questions:
How does he update his application with subsequent awards? Does he just edit the online application?
Can other recommendations be sent to Admissions, such as a letter from his employer? Or is it just the English, Math, PE recommendations that are required?
Does Admissions keep his letters of recommendation from his AIM application?
Does the interview at Cadet for a Day count as the admissions interview, or should he also contact his state's admissions officer?
Thank you in advance! I love this forum. We are anticipating the mail and hope to hear before January 14 (son will be out of town and he won't let me open his mail).

Luigi,

Thank you for the quick reply.

How do I send my updated my awards?

I can add scholar athlete, softball captain, and varsity softball (4th year straight), is it worth it to send them that?

update file

My son sent in his first semester grades by mail and then called to follow up. He missed the dates for EA and were told that they rec'd the updates and would hear back sometime in mid January.

As far as awards, etc. you can send them to your admissions officer for inclusion in your file. @scutrules, yes send those in by all means.

I was deferred from EA last year (when there was only one group). I updated my file, sent in grades, etc. But I did two things that I think really led to my appointment. First, I scheduled an interview with an Academy Admissions Partner (AAP). Second, after not hearing anything for a while, I just called my admissions officer. I asked if there were any updates and chatted for a few minutes. The next day, she called back and told me I had been accepted.

It is beyond worth it to send that in!

First D in DS or DD?

Hello, while I have been an avid reader on this forum for a few months, this is my first time writing in. My son is an USCGA EA1 deferral and I have found this site to be very supportive and educational not only for myself and family but also as an employee at my sons high school I am better able to understand and advise up and coming seniors about the academy. My question is and has been for a few months now, what does the first D in DS or DD stand for?

Updating application Question

My DD was also an EA1 applicant deferred to RA and is working on beefing up her file with positive things such as udated first semester grades, new awards, and a couple more recommendations. Question is:

1. Does she send in her ROTC scholarship award letter? How would that be viewed by CG? Don't want them to think she is less than committed to CG, since they would be first choice.

2. Also, how about letters offering monetary scholarship awards from other colleges/universities she applied to? Is this stuff worth notifying USCGA admissions of and sending in?

Thanks for any thoughts/advice on this.

"Deferred?"

Yes, I would notify USCGA about ROTC and 'some' monetary scholarships awarded, but not necessarily mail in all letters. My daughter was accepted EA but was awarded ROTC and notified of finalist status in a Gen Hugh Shelton scholarship program at NC State after her application packet was submitted. She just sent an email to her Admissions Officer who said they would update the file. I would not be inclined to notify of all scholarships (e.g. scholarships to a private college with tuition of $30+K per year where they send a letter offering a $10K off the tuition - in some cases they are more recruitment tactic for any highly qualified candidate than a 'competitive' award).

Thanks for the confirmation. Those were kind of my thoughts on that as well. Seems most $40-50K colleges/universities offer $6-12K to get kids in the door and call it some kind of merit/academic scholarship award.

Last year, the merit scholarships at most universities that cost around $40k-$50K only awarded me enough to pay off one year of college expenses over four years.

Since you can't enter the CGA with debt, my decision was pretty clear-cut to go to UConn (I live in CT).

Good point if you plan on applying to USCGA (or any other SA) in future!

DS just got the TWE for CGA for EA2. Ok so he was put into regular admissions. At least its not a no. He call the Academy at he was at the mailbox and asked if he could have an interview. They told him to email them. So he has, he is also retaking the SATs on the 22nd which they said was the last date and sending in another recomendation from his youth minister along with his latest grades that come out tomarrow of all A's again. He is also applying to USAF (recd MOC nomination but no LOA yet) He is an Eagle Scout with all A's with one B in art history in the 9th grade. OOPS... This entire process is a nailbitter... anyone else get the letter? He also just found out on DODMBER AROTC showed up without a letter yet so who knows about that. He got into his first 2 schools but no ROTC yet.... He's allover the map with all of the academy's but he likes all of them in a different way, they each offer something great for him. Oh he's been taking Pashtu for 2 years now in HS.

Hi, I've been reading since my son became interested in the CGA a few months ago. He was deferred from EA1 and recently submitted a packet of updates. The comments and suggestions from this website are very helpful! We are located many states away from the CGA, but are very aware of the Feb. 1 deadline to submit anything new. How important is a visit to the CGA to interview with Admissions Officers in person? With a lot of juggling and prayers for good weather, we could arrange it within 2 weeks. Had we known that this would be his Service Academy choice and number one college/career choice, we would have visited earlier, but it evolved as he went through the nomination process in our state! Did anyone else who was deferred from EA1 have time to visit? How was it and which tour did you arrange? Thanks for any tips you can give!

do you think the same goes for nominations? I was nominated to USNA, is it worth letting the academy know this?

Hi, my son was deferred from EA1. We have visited twice. We did the basic tour last spring and he was cadet for a day this past fall. Both were worth it, however I don't know how much it helped. It did make him realize that the USCGA was his first and only choice. I know if he doesnt make it this year, he will try again next year.
