Hey everyone!

So I am about two days away from being a 2nd semester 4th class as leave expires at 2200 (10 pm) Tuesday night! I just wanted to wish all of those who are waiting for a response and those deferred from EA good luck! Remember, good things come to those who wait! I also just wanted to let you all know that myself, Sam, and a couple of other CGA cadets are on this board to answer any questions you might have. Considering Sam and I finished R-Day about only 4 months ago and are 4/c, we would love to help answer any questions. Good luck to everyone!

Son deferred from EA Group 1

Congrats on getting through your first semester. My son got a letter from EA Group 1 deferring him to reg admission. They asked him to send new grades, scores, recs, etc. by Feb 1. Any idea how many deferrals actually make it in? Thanks for any advice on how to turn it into an acceptance. Not to sound stupid, but what is a BFE? Obviously, I'm new to the forum. Thanks!

Thank you for the congrats...it was a long but great semester! I'll answer the easy question first. BFE stands for the Big Fat Envelope...the one an acceptance letter comes in. From what I have heard and read on this forum, the class size for 2015 is going to be around 290. Looking at Objee's stats, 109 from EA 1 were offered appointments (57 full and 52 conditional). I would hazard a guess that the conditionals are still waiting to complete DoDMERB. Now I doubt all of the 109 appointments offered will accept, I am sure some of them applied to other SAs or colleges higher on their "dream list." But just looking at the numbers, there are about 181 appointments still to be offered.

I wouldn't know the exact numbers so maybe Objee could help out with this but I know of a lot people in my class who were deferred from EA and accepted last year. I even have a friend who got a phone call about 2 weeks before R-Day asking if he would be interested. As for advice on his application, definitely send in anything and everything that falls under the parameters in the deferral letter, any award, new leadership position, etc can only help your son. I hope this helped, good luck to your son!

Thanks for the info. BFE - now I feel like an idiot - actually figured it out after I asked but glad to know I was right. Happy to hear about other deferrals making it in. His GPA is higher 1st quarter and he thinks it will be 2nd quarter - won't know for another 3 weeks so that might help. Good luck next semester!

Will we see a nice gold star on your SDBs this winter?

Actually, they'll be a lot more appointment offers than 181. :thumb:

As you noted above, not everyone who is offered an appointment accepts it. If data from the past is any indication of what will happen this year, about 72% of appointments will be accepted.

USCGA will probably offer somewhere north of 400 appointments to get a class size of ~290. Therefore, there are approx 300 more appointments to be offered.

Agreed! The first semester was a long and hard one, but I definitely learned a lot. To all of the prospectives who haven't received an appointment- be sure to keep in contact with your admissions officer and continue to convey your interest in attending. Frequent communication will go a long way.

Unfortunately, no shiny gold star for me this semester. Honestly though, that doesn't matter to me because of how much I've learned- and I don't mean academics. At the beginning of the semester I failed all of my tests and didn't know how to study or anything. I've learned how to fail, manage my time, work with others, and ask for help. Things that I'm sure are going to help me out a LOT for the 2nd semester.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask me, track, or any of the other 2014-er's on here :thumb:

Unfortunately no, but you will see a silver one! My goal is to work towards a bronze star this coming semester along with another silver one.

Thanks for the help at that question Luigi, I was only going off of what I read on here so its good to have people on this forum who actually know. :shake:

Since you're offering, I have a question. When (and what) is the musical this year?

I will look it up on the portal when I get back to school but I know that the Academy has had auditions for the Winter Musical...right before Thanksgiving. Because Leamy Auditorium is under construction, the musical is taking place in Dimmick so it is only an eight person production. I will let you know the dates and title when I get back.

I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change is the musical (per my D)...and is scheduled for late February (she thinks the last weekend of the month).
