Braces

My DS, class of 2013, was a candidate for each of the 5 academies as well as ROTC. He had braces on his teeth when he had his DODMERB exam. It was a disqualification for all of them. He had to do a remedial and have his orthodontist verify that his braces would be removed before reporting. Each academy as well as ROTC then gave him a waiver. As soon as he got his braces off (about a week before reporting), his orthodontist had to fill out another form verifying they were off. My understanding was that if his braces were not off before reporting that it would have remained a DQ.
 
I have two kids at service academies, both had braces before their DODMERB exam. Go to the DODMERB website. There is a form there for your dentist. Get it filled out and fax it to Larry Mullen (DODMERB thread) and you won't have to worry abnout a DQ and then getting a waiver!:thumb:
 
U can't have braces on when you are admitted (R or I Days) to any Service Academy.:thumb:
 
Sorry, what I meant to say was that we filled out the form provided by DODMERB and submitted it after it was signed by the orthodontist. He assured DODMERB that the braces would be removed before reporting to the academies, which they were. We avoided a DQ by being proactive.:redface:
 
Ok!! thank you all so much for the information!! as a matter of fact, I do not have braces, but me and my parents were trying to decide whether we should get them on before or after the Academy experience!
 
You may have braces while at a Service Academy - after Beast or Plebe summer. Wait until you get there and ask the dentist there to fit you.
 
After a dental evaluation...and after that Academy's basic training....if a cadet or mid requires braces, they will be referred by the dentist to the orthodontist for treatment:thumb:
 
Third route, I had a ortho at home in TX give me braces from jan 2008 to jan 2010 (I am class of 2010 USAFA). I got permission from the USAFA ortho first who said that was fine as long as they were off before graduation. Key part, USAFA won't "officially" maintain them. Cleanings were fine. I had two brackets pop over the two years (first one within a week of getting the braces) and the USAFA ortho was kind enough to glue both back on. :D

Sitting happily now with permanent retainers on active duty and straight teeth! :thumb:

Want to make sure that I understand this correctly. So, for the purposes of DoDMERB braces are disqualifying, but permenant retainers are not disqualifying?

Wait for more informed(ie Mr. Mullen) but my DS has permenant lower retainer and it didn't even pop up a remedial for Army ROTC. Hope that helps until Mr. Mullen can get back to you.
 
"d. Current orthodontic appliances (mounted or removable; i.e., Invisalign®) for continued active treatment (V53.4). Permanent or removable retainers are permissible. Individuals undergoing active orthodontic care are acceptable for accession (including DEP) only if a civilian or military orthodontist provides documentation that active orthodontic treatment shall be completed prior to being sworn into active duty. Entrance to active duty will not occur until all orthodontic treatment is documented to be completed.":thumb:

So do I understand this correctly - if the Appointee is currently being treated with Invisalign by an orthodontist who completed the form staying the active treatment would be stopped by the in-processing date for BCT; the cadet can then only re-institute the Invisalign treatment following BCT upon being examined by a dentist (presumably a USAFA dentist?) who then states that the orthodontic appliance is required and refers the cadet to an orthodontist? (or, can the cadet's private orthodontist simply reinstitute the treatment following BCT . . . ).:confused:
