Once your application has gone to NETC for "final processing and selection determination" is it possible to change the ranking of your 5 schools?

My sons had that message and now says "The NSTC Selection/Placement Office has received your application."

It would be really nice if the military (all three branches) could get websites that list your deliverables and a true status with each step checked off.

Yes you can change your school choices. Send an email to PNSC_NROTC_APPLICATIONS@navy.mil. State your first and last name in the email. However, if you have been selected, then you cannot change your school choice list. If you have been selected you can send an email to PNSC_NROTC.placement@navy.mil requesting a transfer from your current unit to any NROTC unit. Your top five school choices are only used during initial placement.

Doesn't the NROTC board make their selection based off of the schools you choose though? I feel like I chose some reach schools (USC, Northwestern) that might make it difficult for me to receive a scholarship. Would it be worth it to change my schools to schools that I have already applied to, and would more likely be accepted at? Or does your school ranking have nothing to do with getting a scholarship for NROTC?

Not really no. They want to get the tier 1 & 2 majors allocated and then the placement department like to build balanced units at each college. i.e. a good mix of majors, backgrounds, and sex ratio etc.

You better list schools that you can get into because once they allocate your school the scholarship can be withdrawn if you don't get into said school.

I've already gotten into my 4th choice school. Should I email them and ask to change it to my fourth? Or if I get the scholarship and don't get into the school, am I able to tell them that I didn't get into my top school but want to the scholarship for a different school on my list? If it helps me at all, I will email them right away and change the order of my schools.

Also, what if I want to go to a school that's not on my top 5 list but does have NROTC. Can I ask to use the scholarship for that school? I did say that I would be happy to have an NROTC Scholarship at any NROTC school so that might help a bit...

The Navy place you at a school. They send a daily list to the ROTC departments at the schools of people that have been placed with the Unit. They don't over allocate to schools so the longer the process goes on the less chance there is of reallocating a cadet elsewhere because the places might all have been filled.

I would remove any school from your list that you might not get into. Also, re-order the schools so the one you already have a place at is number one or two. let them know in the email you have been accepted at the school already.

Thank you so much for your help!

Here is my list now:
1. Georgetown
2. Miami University of Ohio
3. California Maritime Academy
4. Northwestern
5. University of Tampa

I've been accepted at Miami and have a really good chance of being accepted at Tampa and Cal Maritime (my in-state). Georgetown and Northwestern are still kinda reaches, but I would LOVE to attend either of the schools.

Email is sent and hopefully this will raise my chances of receiving a scholarship!

Teir 2 Economics for all schools but CMA, they don't offer econ so I chose Marine Transportation.

What if the school you are assigned to offered you an admissiom, but not in the program you put in your application to NROTC & the school (i.e. accepted in Arts & Sciences and not Engineering)?

People forget when putting on their applications that their school choices are very important. And that one post was correct, as the process goes on, schools begin to fill up.

Once selected and placed in a school, it can get hard to switch schools, because it is not automatic if you don't get accepted into your assigned school.

Placement can promise you they can get you into a school where your scholarship can be used, but they can't promise you that it will be into one of your requested schools after initial placement.

For Navy you would need to get a major in the same tied.

Florida Dad is correct, if you change fields or schools, you need the Navy's blessing.

Every yr there are candidates who try to "work" the system by applying for engineering, than switching from that to a non-tech degree after being awarded the scholarship. All of the sudden they freak out because now the money they counted for might not be there because they changed majors.

If the NROTC money is the only way you can pay for the college, don't put yourself in that position.

5 schools?

Reality is, my DS is only really interested in 2 schools..and the first choice is REALLY what he wants....should he delete the other schools on his application? He never applied to the other 3 he listed and would not want to go even if he received a NROTC scholarship. At the time of his NROTC application he hadn't visited campuses and has in the meantime checked them out and has been accepted at the 2 he applied to and liked.

It depends on what his school choices are. Each NROTC unit has a cap, there is an instate cap and out of state cap. It is attempted to place at first choice school, but if that school is filled then it goes to the second choice, so on and so on. The first choice school is not promised. That is why the application states that it is recommended you apply to all 5 schools. After initial placement it is not necessarily simple to transfer to another school.

Schools popularities change each year, honestly, depending on if the school's football and basketball team is doing well. And there are other schools that fill up after the first couple of boards. Once selected, transfers are not looked at until Mar/Apr timeframe, to allow placement of all boards. Applicants are immediately waitlisted. School can be easily rearranged until selected. Top 5 school choices are used for initial placement, after initial placement is done, then any school can be requested for transfer. If before Mar/Apr timeframe students are immediately waitlisted for the requested unit. If after this time, if there is availiability transfers are granted immediateley and if not then they are waitlisted.

He must have 5 school choices, so he cannot take any other of his choices off.

It is always so interesting to read how differently each branch operates regarding their ROTC program.

I am curious for the rationale of forcing 5 schools. Doesn't that actually create double work if the candidate only wants 2 or 3 and never intends to apply to 5 for admission purposes?

It creates double work sometimes for the student, in regards to stressors. Because they are placed on a waiting list and if the cap does not drop low enough to offer them a position at the requested school, and they don't apply or get into the school in which they are assigned, they could essentially lose the scholarship. That is why transfers can be guarenteed to an open unit once waitlists are begun being worked, but not necessarily into a requested unit. In the end it shows who really wants to be in the Navy and who is just utilizing the scholarship because it is going to pay for school. Although there are some kids who want the requested school so much as well as to be in the Navy, that they will decline the scholarship and join the college program (which no expenses are covered) at the school. We have caps at each school and not everyone is going to get assigned to Embry Riddle, Penn State, or San Diego. Caps are created to equally spread out applicants among the schools.

I've seen the question asked a number of times about whether an applicant should advise the NROTC (before they've been awarded a scholarship) that they have been accepted by one of their colleges. Does the selection committee care (before awarding a scholarship) whether an applicant has already been accepted into any/all of his colleges or is it just a waste of an email to advise you?

In my case, I put down 5 schools because I had to. I would only accept a scholarship if it was for my 1st choice school. If not, it's gonna be student loans and hoping for a lot of outside scholarships. Luckily, I received a Corps Of Cadets scholarship at Texas A&M that qualifies me for in state tuition. My parents are going to help out as much as they can. But they know that they can't cover all of the costs. Their unit fills up really fast too, so its a bummer I didn't get a scholarships at the first board.

There's still hope for the 2nd board though...
