Do they stagger the presidential appointments? My son is 3 Q'd, and has a presidential and MOC nomination and hasn't heard anything yet.. is this a bad sign?

I wouldn't think bad of it very much. If I'm not mistaken, the academy can only take 100 that have Presidential nomination correct?

It's a bit complicated. Only 100 Pres nominees are counted/slotted against the President. However, those with a Pres nom may still receive an appointment and be slotted vs. another source (e.g., SecNav).

USNA needs to determine which candidates have which noms in order to figure out how to slot people. MOC noms are due Jan. 31. Thus, most people don't hear until Feb and March.

I received a MOC nom from a senator. I am getting the paperwork together for the presidential nom..should I even apply for it? Does it make me anymore competitive to have the two or not?

The more the better. Not that it makes you a more worthly candidate; it gives Admissions more flexibility to appoint you.

Say there's a candidate from your district who's a equal to you but doesn't have that Presidential. They can offer the Senator's slot to her and the Pres. to you. Without that Pres. one of you might be left out.

Apply.

And beyond the flexibility multiples might provide USNA admissions, this also reveals apparent motivation to pursue all avenues.
