I looked at a few places and I saw that the deadline to apply is January 10. Do I wait until senior year to apply for one? (I am currently a junior in high school)
Thanks for any help in advance.

Armyman736, glad you found this forum so early in your application process. I'm not a resident "expert", but I do know from DS's application experience that the current deadline of 10Jan is for this years Seniors. The process will open for Juniors/rising Seniors to apply sometime in February - DS completed his application in Feb2010, did his Presidential fitness, ACT and transcript to Cadet Command in May, interviewed and did APFT at his 1st school choice in July and was considered "board ready" by 1Aug2010. I strongly encourage you to read past threads to take advantage of ALL the information posted here. Many posters have had multiple children go thru the process and can offer insight that could make a big difference for your future sucess. Good luck!

Ohio is correct regarding the process.

The one thing to keep in mind is to be cognizant of the colleges you place on the list because it will stink if you get a scholarship to the college, but a rejection letter from them for matriculation.

Okay thank you everyone for your help. I am also applying to west point so if I would get accepted for ROTC scholarship and west point can I deny the ROTC scholarship?

Scholarship apps for 2016 will open late spring, so you have a couple months. If you get started by the middle of the summer you will be right on. And the answer is yes you can decline your West Point offer if you get an ROTC scholarship (and vice versa):)

Thank you. How hard would you say it is to get a four year scholarship?

I have:
23 ACT
3.84 GPA
9 of 53 class rank
3 years cross country (1 year captain and 1 varsity letter)
1 year golf
Will do track this semester
Student government
Over 150 service hours

Would this be considered competitive?

Its fairly competitive but the interview will be important. Is that a weighted or unweighted GPA?

Armyman,

Try and get your combined ACT score to 24 or above, this will help in making your application more competitive.

So, the AROTC scholarship process is a competitive one. Is it competitive when I jump in the big national "pool" or is competitive based on the college of my choice? Based on below stats what can I expect?

I'm a HS Junior and have already visited/interviewed at 3 out of 4 of my college selections (ranked by selectivity: Univ of Michigan, VMI, Wheaton and Gordon-Boston). I will apply to USMA but understand it's a stretch. I have a 3.6 GPA unweighted from college prep academy, taking honors and AP, top 25% of class, one college class a semester for 11th and 12th, 31 ACT, student gov't all four years, character awards, mission trips, cross country and physically fit.

I feel pretty sure that I could get into all four schools (Dad and Mom went to U of M). Are there limited "slots" at these schools? What would make this competitive?

Solon,

keep reading here in the old threads-there are a lot of great posts on the topic of school selection and how it may weigh into your AROTC chances. The thread January 4, 2011 board has some in the later pages about college choice. Also, look for links in old threads to PFT(Presidential Fitness Test) scoring and how it will impact your application. Just to clarify, do you have a varsity letter in XCountry? This is important to look into, also team captain carries a lot of weight in the process. Glad you are so far doing everything right by identifing schools and meeting the ROTC cadres at each school. Hopefully other who are board "experts" will be along to put in their 2 cents soon

Extremely helpful to go back to previous threads. They were kind of buried. I probably wouldn't have stumbled on it. I think most of us who are new to military procedures would find this information helpful-maybe a "sticky" note about selection process. I just did the PFT and scored in 90th%ile. I'll have my varsity letter this fall. They haven't picked captain yet.

So Is it competitive when I jump in the big national "pool" or is competitive based on the college of my choice?

Yes, limited slots nationally, and at each school.

Based on below stats what can I expect? ...
What would make this competitive?

My humble advice on how to get a Army ROTC scholarship.
Have a strong, well thought out desire/plan to be an Army officer.
Choose a 1st choice school where you are in Honors/top 25% student GPA/ACT/class rank
Interview and overnight w/1st choice school
Do VERY well on Interview and PT test.
Complete the entire application early.

Have 2 of these;
  • Valedictorian/Salutatorian
  • Membership in National Honor Society
  • Honors or Advanced Placement Program Courses
  • GPA over 3.0 AND SAT/ACT over 1100/24
  • Top 10% of class
Have 2 of these;
  • Varsity Letter from High School team
  • Membership of regional/city/competitive league
  • Either active involvement in organized competitive (club, church league) team, sports or active involvement in individual athletic, competitions (triathlon, mountain biking, running, etc.)
Have 2 of these;
  • Elected member of student government, class, activity
  • Captain of athletic or academic team - Eagle Scout/Gold Star/CAP Billy Mitchell
  • Served in position of responsibility in school/club or private organization and leader in volunteer service organization activities

Thanks for the encouragement about WP. I applied for SLS but haven't heard back from them. I looked at the first year course load and am concerned about the math. WP is probably concerned for me, too. I was in the top 8% on the PSAT but only because I aced the reading and writing and below average on math. I want a career in the Army and can see how both programs, ROTC (Paul Revere Battalion at MIT would be my 1st pick) and WP would prepare me well.

Solon,
I'm sorry I didn't see this earlier, but if you have any questions about ROTC at Wheaton, let me know!
