Hey everyone, I was wondering if you could tell me what you think my chances are for the NROTC Scholarship! :)

*ACT: (English-32, Math-25, Reading-28, Science- 23)
*2 Years of Varsity Girls Weighlifting (6th place at a Meet) (Varsity Letter 11th grade- 1st year lifter)
*4 Years in Student Government (3 leadership positions held)
*4 Years in Model UN (three 1st places, one 2nd place, one 3rd place, one position paper award + leadership position as fundraising coordinator)
*2 AP Classes (Literature and Language) - score of 3 on Lang.
*4 Dual Enrollment Classes- (Government, American History, Humanities, Environmental Biology)
*12 Honors Classes
*3.9 Weighted GPA
*Biology Tier 2 Major (was originally Public Health Tier 3 major but I emailed the Selection board and they emailed me back saying they changed my major from a Tier 3 (public health) to a Tier 2 (biology)
*3 years in Key Club
*Involvement in Florida Girls State
*1st Generation Student
*Top 6% of class

I feel somewhat confident that I'll get a scholarship, however, I have one thing that might be getting in my way of receiving a scholarship- weight.

Right now, I way 191 lbs, and my body fat was measure at 38% (3% over the limit). I'm so worried that this will be the determining factor in my scholarship application that will basically tell the board that I shouldn't receive a scholarship. I pray that the scholarship board doesn't turn me down because of my weight and body fat, simply because I know I'll be able to lose the weight, as I've put myself on a strict diet and exercise regiment that will allow me to lose the weight and body fat, which will then put me in the physical condition I need to be in to participate in ROTC. I also feel like if I was to take the physical test I could indeed pass it, as I have a timed mile of 7.5 minutes, a personal record of 35 pushups in a minute, and the ability to do 68 situps in a minute. I haven't taken the actual physical fitness test from the Navy, but I'm kind of wondering if I should ask if they could lieu that in until I make weight requirements. I'm dedicated to losing the weight and passionate about joining the Navy and participating in NROTC, but I just want to make sure my chances aren't going to be hindered by my weight :/

Math and Science are a little low. Not sure they even look at science though, since it has nothing to do with actual science. What's your composite score?

Look, bottom line is that NROTC is primarily about Engineering, Math and Science (85% of awards by rule). Your GPA is fine, but your math & science are quite low for NROTC... they'd be fine for AROTC which isn't so into math/science. That's a very high English score, congratulations.Because of your lowish math/science, AND because you don't list any AP math or science, your other two aspects would have to be far above average:

- Leadership/Service
- Physical Fitness

Since Physical Fitness is also borderline (you say you're 3% over the allowable body fat index), you're actually weak in 2 of the 3 areas the Navy cares about.

It also seems like you switched your major to Biology just to have a better chance as a Type II major, when there is no evidence that Biology is a strong interest of yours... you didn't take AP Bio in High School. Good luck battling it out with pre-meds if you aren't excited about Biology!

However, you note that you are a first generation college student. Are you a Diversity applicant (African American, AsianPacificIslander/Hispanic/Native American)? That makes a big difference. see page 5 on this NSTC Bulletin: http://www.cnrc.navy.mil/Publications/Directives/1131 NROTC GOALS FY10.pdf The Navy last year took 31% Diversity, and some Recruiting Districts (such Miami and Jacksonville) are 50%+ Diversity in their target applications (last page, same link) -- though this does not identify how many Scholarship Awards.. just Application targets.

If only... I'd say I'm a very competitive candidate AND I'm Hispanic and I am yet to hear anything back from the board. Applied early, technical major; everything.

There is something seriously wrong with this Bulletin. It says you need a composite ACT Score of 49 for a "high quality" NROTC scholarship. I thought ACT Composite Scores only go up to 36. It would be unfortunate if someone with an ACT composite score of, say, 36 didn't qualify for an NROTC scholarship this year because of a typo in a NSTC Bulletin.

I know I didn't take AP Biology, but it wasn't offered at my high school, however, I did take Honors Biology and recieved an "A" for both semesters, if it makes a difference. Additionally, I did take a Dual Enrollment Science class, if that factors in at all, which I've recieved an "A" and a "B" in. I don't know if they look and factor in grades as well, as my recruiter picked up my transcripts and sent them to the board, but my science classes have always been all A's and B's, and my math classes have also been all A's and B's.

I have been told the Army do look at weight/height and BMI at the board. They have a cut off line and its pretty black and white.

Not sure if the Navy are the same but you really need to work on that weight if only for your own good health.
