I was talking to my girlfriend about USMA and all the qualifications a few months back and we ended up talking about the Parental Obligations thing.

Does not having a legal obligation mean that you can still have a child as long as you are not legally required to care for it during your time at the academy?

I always assumed this to be true and no my girlfriend is not pregnant or anything I was just curious.

The actual regulation states that you can't have a legal obligation to a child but does not mention actually having a child. I know a cadet left last year because she got pregnant and is back here now. My guess is that her parents adopted the children but I wouldn't know exactly what she did with it.

There was a lot of discussion about this when, last year, a mid at USNA who found she was pregnant two months before graduation (engaged to a classmate) was permitted to remain with the class and graduate on time. The general rule is that you cannot be pregnant or have an obligation to support a child. On another forum, female cadets have said that a year's leave for pregnancy, followed by adoption by cadets' parents is one solution. Also from that forum, male cadets, with girlfriend's cooperation, have not been named as fathers on birth certificates, and have adopted their own children after graduation.

Is there a way that you could just get the girlfriend to agree to you not being obligated for your time at the academy? Without having to deny being the farther?
