Midyear/Semester Grades

I received an appointment in December. Do I still submit a mid-year report/transcript? How would I go about doing so?
Also, is there anything that I need to submit other than the papers that came in the BFE?

Yes, you should submit mid-year grades. I'm unsure if USNA would request these via email or if you need to have them sent. Others can clarify the specifics, I'm confident.

Again, congrats, especially on the early appointment. What a relief! Makes Christmas and 2nd semester a whole lot more fun and less stressful. Yes!

I also received an appointment, and does anyone know if we need to "try hard" the rest of senior year? Like what if I were to have a "senior slide" and let my grades slip a little... could the Academy receive my end of the year transcripts, notice that, and then send me a letter saying that they take-back my appointment?

And to C.steve.. I kind of wish I knew too. My grades aren't slipping, but second semester is going to be difficult to stay motivated. I can't imagine USNA taking away your appointment though unless you reallllllly let it slide, like failed classes and such.

Yea, I heard the general rule was "Not one F or 3 Ds for a final grade."
Not saying I'm even in that ball park, my grades have slipped from As and one B to four Bs and only three As.

I hate to be the spoiler in this, but I really don't support the idea of Senior Slide, especially for someone going to a SA. Most plebes are going to discover a new concept in education - having to study to keep up. As has been discussed in other threads on this site, some will see low grades for the first time in their lives. Now that you have seen the disclaimer, you are free to proceed at your own risk. Completely agree.

1964 is absolutely correct. My Plebe is living in a whole new world where he actually has to work...HARD...to get decent grades (and I'm not talking about the straight A's, occassional B's he was used to getting). Got his first C ever last semester and was NOT ammused considering how much harder he worked than in all his high school years combined.

Also, it might be a good idea to realize that no one will care if you feel you "deserve a break" at an SA. You will have to keep fighting, clawing, sweating for every step, no matter how well you did yesterday. I guess my message is NEVER stop giving your best...it will be expected of you at all times very soon!

I pile on w/ 1964 et. al. It's not cruise control time. Pedal to the metal.

One noted he could not imagine USNA rescinding an appointment for sloppy performance. Much tougher to imagine is that student who, appointment in hand, lets it slip-slide away because he could not imagine being booted for his sloppy performance. Now that is tough to imagine.

Btw, while a horse of a different color, can you imagine USNA tossing out 7 Mids who consumed legal weed? These young people already had tens of thousands of $$ invested in them. And btw, sadly, there are more in that emptying pipeline.

USNA is not your mama's Navy. (Unless Mama was a Mid. ) Enjoy, have some fun, keep working to the best of your ability.

Depending on where you live, you could be reporting for I-Day about a week after you graduate from high school (school lets out here in the northeast the third week of June!). Validation exams at USNA begin about a week into Plebe summer, so you will be happy that you didn't slack off in the second half of senior year.

I have a slightly contrary view:

Most kids that are accepted to the Naval Academy are a bunch of eager beaver-over achievers. You have GPA's that most of your classmates envy and are likely near or at the top of your HS graduating class. For you to go from A's to D's and F's would be rediculously out of character and not the point of the question originally asked about slipping grades.

My Opinion: If you have some grades that slip from an A to B or even one C. You have nothing to worry about. The Academy will not even see your final semister grades until after I-Day. So if you spend some extra time with friends or family rather than study those extra few hours to get that A, go for it. Enjoy the hell out of the next few months. Reality is your childhood is going to end very ubruptly and unpleasantly on I-day. Enjoy the last days of that childhood now becuse it will never be back.

Now that said: You Can Not be stupid. Getting hurt or a scrape with the law in the next few months can and likly will be show stoppers for your future Academy careers. These are the big items you need to avoid. The issue of slightly slipping grades is a "Mouse Nuts" issue when compared to getting busted by the law or breaking an arm or leg 2 months before I-Day.

If you have already received your appointment, no need to submit your grades. The Academy will ask your school for a year-end transcript.

If you have not yet received an appointment and/or become scholastically qualified and they want to see your midyear grades in order to make their determination, they will ask your school for them. Not to say though that if you have not received a scholastic qualification or appointment and your grades are way above your norm and/or you received an 'A' in AP Calculus or something along those lines, you might go ahead and submit them. It can't hurt.

I received an LOA with only the "nomination" box checked, so should I be looking to submit my midyear report sometime soon? and if so, is it done by mail only? Thanks
ps I have not heard back from nomination sources yet, so I don't have an appointment

No one is required to submit grades unless asked. With an LOA, you only are required to pass DoDMERB, successfully complete the CFA, and obtain a nomination. Nothing else can you do to improve your posture with Admissions.
