"Less is more" was my cadet's philosophy.

He did take compression shorts, a cheap watch (still wearing), a couple of extra pairs of green and black socks, moleskin, Gold Bond, tan duct tape (he did use it), small flashlight, Leatherman, basic toiletries, retainer, small Bible. He took some stamps and WP provided the stationery but he only wrote 3 times.

He took, but did not use, baby wipes and Body Glide. Boys are different---they don't mind stinking and being gross, but rather take pride in it.

He did NOT take a picture frame, alarm clock (watch has one), sandpaper, parachute cord.

The NCs learn to share with each other so what one doesn't have, someone else does. His company was taken to the C-Store a couple of times.

You do NOT want to be the person on R-Day pulling the giant rolling duffle bag. Keep in mind that anything they think the NC does not need will be stored until A-Day.

There is an older thread from last year with good information on R-Day.

My bag for rday was:

underwear and bras
extra athletic and black socks
moleskin
lighter pocket knife
paperwork
boots

wore my low quarters. take very little; they'll provide the rest, and any personal items like a calculator and mp3 player and cell phone can be brought on Aday.

Sunglasses are not permitted during Beast; save for A-Day.
Remember that Leatherman and lighter can't be carried on - might be easiest to mail ahead of time if you're flying in.
Shouldn't need Leatherman and a pocketknife.
My cadet is fair-skinned, and needed stronger and more sweatproof sunblock than the 15 SPF issued.
Flashlights were issued; good calculators were not (but were not needed until classes started).
Pack light for R-Day!

For A-Day, coordinate with roommates - one iron/ironing board, one fan, one coffee pot or similar per room.
This past year, with record heat, parents were permitted to ship fans during Beast, but may not happen every year.

Seriously, it is still January. You will have the whole month of June to freak out about this stuff.

The 2015 instructions for admitted applicants packet says that sunglasses are allowed to be brought, but does not specifiy any restrictions on type or color.

To R-day, I brought
- Extra white crew socks, extra sports bras, extra underwear, sock liners (all around 5-10 ea)
- Watch
- Picture frame/collage thingy
- Broken-in boots
- Hair stuff
- Lighter
- Bible
- Cash & debit card
- Cell phone (I flew out by myself)
- Retainer

No low quarters, no pumps, no body glide, no address book/envelopes/stamps, no sharpies, no batteries, no baby wipes, no Qtips, no duct tape, no 550 cord . The only stuff I brought really couldn't have borrowed/gotten my hands on at West Point was hair barettes that matched my hair color.

Bottom line: less is better. My parents mailed me out a leatherman a week or so into Beast, but that wasn't a must-have sort of thing.

I thought you had to report with the low quarters on?

June is all ready booked up! Not much time between reporting on Rday and graduation, family vacay, and an all girls graduation cruise.

Well I hope she has time to do some workouts. Showing up at Beast in less than the best physical shape of one's young life is not advisable.
She still has May.
Honestly, the list gets refined from year to year - even the boot/shoe letter changes.
If she is truly pressed for time, she could show up with the clothes on her back they would take her and she would probably make it through.

Take plenty of "bubblewrap"! :thumb:

You betcha Dixieland! We've put a kibosh on all offshore excursions, well. . . except for the scuba diving

Hi. Sorry to dig up an old post, but for the roommates part, are your roommates during beast the same as the Academic year, get new ones during the transitional week, or like all four years at the Academy have same ones, etc?

You change after beast, and you will likely change roommates every semester.

Yes its called "scrabble". Upper classman get a chance to choose their buddies in most cases

Actually, it's called "scramble." Some companies change roommates and rooms, others do not. Mine is in the same room w/ the same roommates for the 3rd semester now. They will change rooms when the new barrack opens, but roommates will be the same.

It seems to be different for each class. Current Cows (c/o 2018) scrambled after Beast (to a new company) and again after Plebe year (to a new company). They found out last Spring that they would scramble again (to a new company) at the beginning of Firstie year, and this past week found out their new companies (so 3x total). Current Yuks have not scrambled since after Beast.
