I've been wondering how you get selected for Boy's state. I'm definitely interested in that.

Thanks everyone.

It differs from state to state. In New Hampshire, a very small state, students are chosen through an application. In other states, mostly ones that are larger than New Hampshire, there is a different application process, I believe.

Generally, your school nominates people to attend through the local American Legion. My school does not, but I was able to get some names from my guidance counselor to talk to, and i found out why people weren't nominated at my school (there wasn't enough interest 11 years ago, so they stopped doing it), and that i could most likely get a sponsorship anyways once applications starts, which is apparently in february. i'm not sure what the situation is like where you live, but my best advice would be to talk to you r guidance counselor.

If your guidance counselor can't help you, talk to your local Legion and they should be able to help you out.

At our school the legion will pay for the top four males in the class rank list. Any others that are interested and have a reasonably high class rank are able to still attend, just have to pay for the week them self. Looks like you should just ask your administration or guidance office because none of these have been the same yet

DS went to GA's boys state

One of the teachers at my DS's high school was responsible for nominating individuals to attend Boys State. The nominess were interviewed by a rep from the local VFW post and selctions made. DS found it to be a worhtwhile experience. The girls chosen for Girls State however only had to make their interest known to a counselor and were given the slot (not enough females at our high school were interested). So...stop by your guidence office for the info for your particular school. Best of luck!

This is a good idea, because the SA's look at this as leadership. Here is the link to Boys State/Boys Nation. You have the potential if picked to go to Washington D.C. and represent you state.

Good luck,

First off, thanks for the info everyone! Second, my school hasn't sent a representative to Boys' State in years so I'm gonna have to be a trailblazer!

For those who went to Boys' State: since I'm the first in a while from my school, should I contact my local American Legion post directly or talk to my school about them nominating me?

Thanks again,

Hahhaha, thanks!

I emailed my regional director for CA boys' state but I'm not sure which American Legion post I should apply to because I am almost directly in between the two nearest to me.

The guy I mentioned above who lost the Lt. Gov. election and has accepted his appt to USMA was one of NC's two representatives at Boys' Nation in DC!
