Can you get into the USAFA or prep school without a nomination?

My son just recently found out that he did not receive a nomination. As you can imagine he is more than disappointed. His status on the the Academy website is "candidate". He's a 3.9 G.P.A. and is athletic and very well rounded person. I want to support him going forward but also want to be realistic in what his chances are of getting in. I would appreciate any insight! Thanks!

There is no possible way to get in without a nomination. He could do AFROTC or whatever he wants to do and apply again next year.

Thanks, could you tell me more about a"general nomination"? My son did not get a congressional nomination so wondering how the general nominations are given.

Please tell me he applied for the VEEP nom? If he didn't than it is over for this yr.

Good news, they love candidates who try again.

Not sure what you're referring to, someone else will undoubtedly explain it to you better, and more thoroughly, than I can. ( I think a Congressional Nomination and VP Nomination are the only types...)

Click on the link in my signature block, and you'll be connected to a PDF file for the academy brochure. It lists every possible nomination. Everyone qualified applicant is eligible for a congressional and VP nomination. "Whether they get it or not is a different story; but they're eligible to apply". The other nominations are military related. e.g. presidential for children of military personnel; ROTC/JrROTC for students in these programs; and there's quite a few others. But all except for the congressional and vice president are usually military related. Click on the link and read it yourself. It's easier that way.

He needs a nomination in order to be offered an appointment. He does not need a nomination to be offered a slot at the AFA prep school - however he may be 'too qualified'.

He may be a good candidate for a Falcon Scholarship through the AFA AOG. I suggest your son contact his ALO, advise him he did not receive a Congressional nomination but is still very interested in the Academy. He can also ask about the possibility of a Falcon Scholarship.
