Hey everybody,
I was accepted into West Point for the class of 2015 and I am wondering which AP tests i should take to help me to validate my classes! I know that only certain AP tests work and that they don't guarantee validation but I was wondering if there is a specific list somewhere (couldn't find one on the dean's site) or someone who has already gone through beast can tell me which tests I should take this May.

History: need a 5 to validate plebe history
English: use AP score and will take an additional test to validate EN101
Chemistry: possible to validate or get into advanced chem with AP score and a high score on plebe placement test.
Calculus: can validate single variable calculus with AP score and score on plebe placement test
Psychology: can get into advanced; no validation

I believe I hit everything.

If you don't mind, vampsoul, could you hit on IT/languages?

vampsoul, what about college credit? My AP scores for Calculus weren't exactly remarkable but I was able to earn an A average last semester in college for Calculus I. In addition, I never took AP Chemistry in high school, but also earned an A average last semester in General Chemistry. Could I use these to validate, along with the plebe placement test?

Assuming you do as well in Calc II and do well on the summer placement test, you should be able to validate single variable calc. As far as chem goes, you won;t validate, but with a good grade on the chem placement test you can get into advanced, which is what I am in. It is worth it, because you take the same tests but move more quickly, do lab reports, and have field trips that the general chem classes do not do. Such as, at the end of the month we are going to the NY nuclear power plant for a day. We had to hand in a security clearance for for it; I'm excited!

The only things you want to validate are Chem and English. Chem gets you a shorter class and more time, and English is...well...English.

You may be able to get into advanced language classes, but you can't validate. Everyone must take 2 semesters of language; 4 if you're a history, foreign area, social science, or english major.

Not sure about IT. I have not heard of anyone validating it. Halfway through they resection to make classes of people with the same skill level.

I wish I could validate English. Although I got a 4 on the AP Lang exam, I was able to receive credit for both semesters of freshman English at Tech...doesn't really work the same way at West Point.

Anyone know anything about IB tests? I'm taking IB History HL, and as a prospective history major I'm hoping I can take some mid/upper-level classes sooner rather than later.

Also any word on validating physics with an AP Physics C score?

I have heard that it is hard to validate physics, harder than validating chem, which is fairly hard, but it is possible.

I would argue against not validating for the sake of taking easier classes. I enjoy my advanced classes and they involve less busy work. Plebe history is a time suck, and even though I want to major in American History, I'm glad I validated out. Also, testing into a higher math means you only have to take 3 semesters of math, not four. Thanks to validation I get to start my major a semester early.

With the history class, is a 5 all you need on the AP test or is there a placement test that goes along with it that you also have to take to validate the class?

vampsoul, what math are you taking this year if you got both Calculus's validated?

And how is the math you're taking? Is it difficult?

A 5 on an AP History exam will get it validated for you. Since only 1 year of history is required besides mil art, multiple 5s will get you nothing more than 1.

I took multivariable calculus (calc III) first semester and am now in differential equations. It's challenging but not difficult, and the teachers are very approachable and available for AI (additional instruction/help).

Ok thanks for the help everyone. So what I am hearing is Calculus BC, any History, Chemistry, Psychology, and either English AP test can help to validate a subject, while language and IT requirements depend only on how well you do at West Point. So there is no point in me taking the Government, Economics, Physics, or Music Theory AP tests since they won't help me validate anything at all?

I would definitely try to take AP Physics. Even if it doesn't validate anything, you will certainly use the concepts you learn from the class again in college physics. Right now, I'm taking college physics and it's pretty difficult. I wish I took AP Physics in high school.

I just finished my 10th Grade year of high school. I wanted to see how I am doing currently and what I need to improve on.
My current GPA is a 103 with it going to increase, my current class rank is either 2 or 3. I am one of the academic leaders in my school, I have taken 3 AP classes thus for with 3 next year and 5 the following. I nailed a 5 on my World History, and on my environmental I received a 3 with a GPA of 100 in that class. I also took AP Chemistry where I did not do as well as I would have hoped on the exam, but I finished with a solid 95 in that class (I wanted to know how much the USMA considers AP scores for application, because I did not do so well on one, but on my future exams I should get all 4s or 5s since I am very solid in those subject areas). Overall in my others classes across the board I am 100s or very high 90s.
- I am a member of my schools competitive marching band with the chance of being a section leader Senior year.
- I am a member of my schools robotics team with the chance of becoming captain of my electrical team Senior year.
- I am a NHS member and will run for President or VP Junior year.
- I am a Winthrop NYU Hospital Junior volunteer every week year round.
- I play for my school's varsity ice hockey team and may be captain Senior year.
- I play for my school's varsity tennis team as well.
- I have participated in several academic contests and scholarship opportunities as well.
- I also attended a STEM Institute my freshman year of school.
- I am also a member of my school's coding club and will most likely obtain a leadership position as well.
- I will also be interning for my local congressman as well.
I have not taken the SAT yet and my first time is this year during my Junior year. I will be going through a lot of prep and my academic skills should hold and I should score very high, I will also most definitely retake it to obtain the highest score possible.

This is rough draft of my current resume with some stuff missing and a lot more to come since I have two years of school left. I wanted to know if I am on the right path and have a solid chance of being accepted into the USMA.
