What is the absolute earliest you could begin your application?

Or what is the recommended time to begin, do you start after you open a portal or could you get all your nominations and CFT test done sophomore year and have everything ready by the start of jr year?

Also, where does taking the SAT/ACT fit into application [optimal time]

I know for the class of 2016 (current high school juniors), I couldn't open my candidate file/apply for SLS (both start at the same time) until about the second week of December in my Junior year. Even then, you still won't take the CFA until SLS or you are told to do it.

I took my ACT sophomore year and got a 30 composite on it (which I plan on retaking) and I took my SAT at the beginning of Junior year (2130). Good enthusiasm though, waiting is definitely the hardest part!
 
I'm anxious to start the nitty gritty of the application, like I assume you are. I believe on my USMA candidate portal it says that the SSK (Second Step Kit) will be open on July 1, 2011 at the earliest.
 
Thanks for the quick responses. Is it worth it to try and contact representatives in your sophomore year to start getting recommendations or is it smarter to just wait until jr year when you can start the application "officially"/
 
@Ectriso: Same! I'm really looking forward to moving the whole process along!

@Texan: you can definitely contact your MALO/FFR and just introduce yourself and let them know about your interest. Ask them if there's anything you should be doing at your age and I'm sure they'll be impressed.
 
I would recommend that after you initially connect with your MALO, apply for SLS, and make your list of colleges that you're thinking about applying for (cause you always need a backup plan- start a long list and go from there), you forget about the application til this summer to focus on your grades and extracirriculars. All the enthusiasm in the world won't help you if you didn't buckle down junior year and get the best grades possible which will help you in your class ranking or in your extracirriculars whether it be sports or other clubs.

For SATs/ACTs, I took SATs in march junior year. Plan on starting to take them early spring your junior year and go from there; it gives you quite a few test dates to work from.

Anyways good luck, we're here if you have questions. I finished up the process over this past summer and found out in October, so I definitly know the value in getting through this as fast as possible, but at the same time, don't rush things and overlook what you need to be doing right now.
 
USMA2016: Yea I am getting really anxious at this point. At least you have your SAT and ACT at a good range even if you want to improve it, so its a little less pressure. I'm taking mine in a couple months :eek: I just wanna get my application done ASAP

Texan: You could definitely contact them and express your interest. However, there is not much you can do other than build your resume (Academics, Athletics, Leadership). I believe the recommendations must come from your 11th grade teachers, so there is nothing you can do about that. Enjoy high school, and don't do anything stupid would be my best advice to you. :thumb:
 
Ectriso, I don't believe your rec's have to be strictly from junior year teachers as long as they correspond with what subjects the Academy asks for. That said, there's been conflicting reports on these boards about that

This is true. There has been a recent decline in MALOs, so the academy has turned to Field Force Representatives (FFRs), but I think they have a similar job.

Contact either though regardless of which type.
