I am little confused about the difference (if there is any) between usma intramurals and company athletics. It says here on the USMA admissions website that there are four different intramural choices per season. But I found another page about Company Athletics that lists different sports like ultimate frisbee. So are company athletics and intramurals not the same thing? Are they both mandatory for cadets? Thanks for any replies.

They are one and the same. What the website meant, is each season there are 4 choices of sports (i.e. you company will have 4 teams participating in 4 different sports). The choices change each season.

What are usually the sports one's company is enrolled to participate in?

It depends. Last semester, the sports were basketball, handball, soccer, wrestling, ultimate frisbee, and football. This semester (they actually start this week), the choices were flag football, rugby, flickerball, swimming, Sandhurst (tryout req'd), and grappling. In past years they also have had biathlon as an option.

Also, every intramural is co-ed, meaning that females are/were on the football (full contact), wrestling, and grappling teams.

How much say is given into what sport you participate in?

I can only speak for my company, but most people get the sport that they want. Some preference is given to upperclassmen, but slots for teams are generally filled up on a first come, first serve basis (within reason - they wouldn't allow a football team to be entirely composed of plebe guys)

So does a cadet request a certain sport to be placed in each season or is the cadet automatically placed according to his/her company? For example if I wanted to do wrestling, would I select wrestling out of the sports offered at the time? Or do cadets participate in all the sports listed in each season with their company?

You will only be placed in one IM team for the semester. ALso, a new addition to IM's this year is that the Brigade Champions get to play Navy. Last semester the competition was held at USNA so I am guessing this semester it will be held here.

Is that for all IM sports? Who won the most last semester?

Last semester, the Army/Navy IM competition included all intramurals except for full-contact football (apparently Navy doesn't have a full-contact team...). We had to have an open tournament to pick a flag football team to compete against Navy's.

If memory serves, USMA won ultimate frisbee and handball. Navy took soccer, basketball, and flag football.

so let me get this right, if i wanted to participate in Grappling. can i just sign up and participate in grappling year round? is that how this works?

They also refused to wrestle us.

West Points has an IM football team that is in the 8 eight man football format, full contact w/pads- no flags. They played and lost to Navy in the Army/Navy IM competition.

We actually held an open competition for flag football here and sent them over to USNA. Our real IM football team never played Navy.

Is weightlifting ever an option or do cadets have to weight lift on time that's not specifically designated for company sports?

There is a powerlifting team but it isn't an IM. All the IM's were already mentioned. If you want to do anything besides that you'd have to find a club team, D1 team, or do it on your own.
