ROTC Scholarship Criteria

How are the different criteria for AFROTC and/or NROTC scholarships weighted in the selection process? Are academics/athletics weighted more or less than leadership experience? How critical is the interview? The PFA?

The reason I ask is: my academics/athletics are pretty decent, and the PFA went well, but I don't have any significant leadership experience other than cross-country team captain and curling club secretary. Also, the interview was ok-my interviewer seemed to like me, but I was a little shaky on some of the questions.

I think this year with more applicants than ever and fewer scholarships you need to be a pretty strong candidate on all levels.

Sounds to me like you do have significant leadership experience. Varsity team captain and school club officer is pretty darn good!

FloridDad's point is a good one. Try your hardest on all levels. Academics play the most important role, but the scholarship boards are really looking at the "whole" person (the basic question is do you have the potential to lead Sailors and Airmen?).

Army ROTC is a bit different than NROTC in terms of school selection, which can make it tougher to earn a scholarship depending on your choice of schools (NROTC forces you to pick a state school as your third choice, while AFROTC doesn't seem to care even though they make you list three schools). For AFROTC, a lot also depends on your stated major. If you pick Engineering, it's easier because that is the expertise that AF is seeking; conversely, if you pick History, it is much more difficult to obtain an AFROTC scholarship. (Army doesn't care).

You should search the ROTC threads and you will find these issues fully discussed (rather than starting a new thread where people have to restate what they've said elsewhere). For AFROTC, I would PM "Pima" and ask if she can send you a link to a thread where the issues for AFROTC have been discussed. Based on your on-line ID, I'll bet that you're a senior, in which case your questions will be answered definitively very soon.
