Updating CFA scores?

I took the CFA once in November and got terrible scores, mostly because I was sick and it didn't seem like I was going to recover anytime soon.

Now I retook the CFA and got significantly better scores. Is there a way I can update the ones on my application? I have tried contacting my counselor, but she isn't returning any of my messages or emails so I have no idea what to do

Were you asked to retake the CFA? That is the KEY question.

If USAFA asked you to retake it, then yes, there's a way to update. If they did NOT ask you to retake it, then the answer is no; you can't update it.

This is a "one shot" eval that USAFA determines whether or not to have you retake.

I would still try to contact your counselor...e-mail and phone!! They're BURIED right now...so it'll take some time. However...THEY have the power to look at how you did previously, look at your entire package, and then decide whether or not to allow a "retake."

Alright, thanks.

So, theoretically, if the rest of my application was in good standing academically and extracurricular-wise, if i performed poorly on the cfa would they likely ask me to retake it then? or in this case, submit the new scores?

The "normal" answer here is...

"IF USAFA likes your package and thinks you are HIGHLY competitive, BUT your CFA is "below what they expect/want/require" then they MAY ask you to retake it."

If your CFA is "acceptable" regardless of it being "high" or "low" then that's it, they won't request a retake.

So...if this is the only thing that you believe "might" be low...I wouldn't worry about it because USAFA isn't. You can still call/e-mail your counselor and ask the question...the worst result is nothing changes.

Thanks, Steve

I finally managed to get through to my counselor, Ms. Davidson. She told me that the only way was for my ALO to request a reset for my CFA submission.

However, could i ask for your personal opinion then, judging by the rest of my application? whether or not its worth resetting in order to submit the new CFA or just to wait for their decision
Because, as of now, the rest of my scores are....

SAT Verbal/Critical Reading: 680
SAT Math: 800
SAT Writing: 670
ACT English: 31
ACT Math: 35
ACT Reading: 26
ACT SR: 36
ACT Combined English/Writing:29

what do you think?

your scores are higher than mine

but that's only one factor in the equation

what EC's have you done?
sports?
what were your academics?

lets see

i do varsity water polo and jv swimming

2 part time jobs
officer for a charity club for our school,
active member for leos
model un delegate

gpa is like a 3.5, but its a 4.0 weighted
took pretty much every ap there was to offer except one

all 5's on ap tests

yeah thats pretty much it. not too much ec wise since i had to work most of the time

oh yeah also like.... 30 units worth of supplemetnary courses at a local community college. iono if it makes much of a difference but yeah

Cryo,

In my (admittedly inexperienced) opinion, I think you should be good. We have extremely similar combined ACT scores -- different individuals though -- and GPAs, ECs, and jobs. Honestly, I think that if the Academy hasn't contacted you about retaking your CFA by now, it isn't going to a determining issue in whether you'll be accepted or not. Meaning you're either good enough anyway and are being considered and your scores were just low (but still acceptable) or you don't have a prayer regardless of your CFA (which I would say you do with and academic/EC record like that).

Just my personal opinion. But you never know, I've heard crazy stories about USAFA admissions (like all colleges).

Alright, thanks

When did you submit your application, though? and did you get accepted?

i just finished my file in early january, so im not sure if they'd have gotten back to me about my cfa by then.

Thanks, Steve

Hi!

Just based upon this, and the follow-on messages you posted, you "appear" to be a highly competitive candidate! :thumb:

Now...with that all said...you could call your ALO and ask the following question: "Sir/Ma'm: you know how I stand, numerically...in your opinion is my WCS "good enough" with the current CFA or should I retake it?"

That would let them know precisely what you're thinking about and you could discuss with them...

But all things considered, since the AFA hasn't asked you to retake it...I'm thinking you're okay with what you have.

I finished in late October, but no LOA. I got my principal nomination from my Congressman last month and now I'm just... waiting. You'll be fine, and listen to flieger83, he knows what he's talking about!

thanks to both of you

But about how long would it take for them to decide whether or not to retake my CFA? If i turned my application in on january, and I just received a nomination last week, about when should i expect them to have my decision?

Also, I received my nomination from Senator Boxer last week for California, but I wasn't able to tell whether it was a principal or competitive nomination. Is there a way to find out?

One question. I'm kind of in the same boat as far as my application and my cfa.

My ALO has asked me if I was planning on retaking the cfa because my scores were kind of low; he recommended I did. But, I have not heard anything from the Academy itself, would a phone call to my counselor be the best option or should I just retake it?

Give a call to her academy contact person. That's probably the one to whom you mailed your application for nomination.

I would definitely call your AFA counselor to confirm that you can retake it. Your ALO may think its worthwhile to do, but the AFA may disagree, especially since they haven't already contacted you to retake it.

I appreciate the advice. Will be giving them a call tomorrow.
