Im trying to find out information on how the transferring process works. I want to go to USMA but my grades/scores are not high enough, so I'm planning on going to Citadel or North Georgia College & State University. I was told that if I still wanted to go there then I could transfer there after my first year at Citadel or NGCSU. I have acouple questions about it.

-If accepted, would I enter as a plebe?
-Would I need a nomination?
-Would USMA still look at my highschool transcript or just my year at college?

Thanks for any information you can give.

and if I did enter as a plebe would I get my degree my junoir year?

You would enter as a plebe. About 30% of all West Point plebes do not come directly from high school. Even those who come from college must complete the entire 47 month experience.
Yes - every candidate needs and must seek a nomination for appointment.
If you are in college and in ROTC then you will have an additional nomination source available - a service related nomination.
USMA will look at your high school transcript and your college transcript. If there are shortcomings in high school they can be overcome by good college work. You also must take your SAT's.

Are you a high school junior or senior right now? Have you taken the SAT's?

I'm a junoir. I have a 3.24 GPA (3.65 wieghted). I got a 620 on Critical Reading and a 600 on Math.

Why do you think your grades aren't good enough to get into WP right out of HS? You should definitely try, and let them be the judge. Do you have good leadership and extra curriculars? Are you an athlete? You still have plenty of time to pull up your SAT's (which are not terrible, btw)...don't sell yourself short!

preparing for USMA

-If accepted, would I enter as a plebe?
Yes, but after one year of college, if you are accepted to USMA, you may be able to validate a course or two which will allow you to take more courses in your major your last two years.

-Would I need a nomination?
Yes

-Would USMA still look at my highschool transcript or just my year at college?
They will look at both, but good grades in college will definitely help you.

Both NGC&SU and The Citadel are very good schools. Have you considered one of the Service Academy Prep programs at MMI or NMMI? If you received an Instructions for Applicants booklet from West Point, the schools West Point recommends as prep programs are described on the last page (at least they were last year). Just another option...like you, my son's two backup schools were both schools that he would have liked to stay for four years...one of those was NGC&SU. They have an excellent Corps of Cadets.

If you want to go to West Point then apply to West Point.
Are you/have you taken higher level math? Pre calc? Calculus next year?
Chemistry and/or phyiscs with a lab?

Are you involved in athletics? Leadership positions in clubs or sports?

The lack of sports is my biggests shortcoming as far as my resume goes. The reason I have decided not to apply is because my grades/scores are on the lower end of all the averages I've seen, and since I have no sports theres nothing to really bring that up.
I have been thinking about the prep program but never really understood how the acceptance process works.
For the most part I have been trying to focus on being accepted at Citadel and/or NGCSU with an ROTC scholarship (I cant afford to go without it).

Just A Mom; Right now I am in Pre-calc. All through high school I have been in a higher math than supposed to but my grades have been B's and C's in them. All my other subjects are honors and for the most part A's. I have gone through chemistry and im in ap biology this year.

oh, you are a junior...

Sorry, I did not see the other posts as I was composing mine...I agree with mom3boys, do not sell yourself short. Your SAT scores are very good and if you have EC's, are physically fit, and are trying for leadership positions for next year, you will be competitive for admission. You have time to bring up that GPA (which is a good one if you are taking diffficult courses). You also have time to start a sport, like track, boxing, Tae Kwon Do, Brazilian Jujitsu.

Have you applied for Summer Leader Seminar? That application serves as a the initial candidate questionaire and puts you in the USMA "system". The first step is becoming a candidate.

Best wishes! And remember, if you do not try you will never know.

Mike -it's true if you don't try you will never know.

If you want - really want - West point then go for it. Make your desires known to your MALO and your Admissions officer they will help you get there.

A big part of the class comes from prior service, prep school or college.

Prep program - entrance into USMAPS - is thought admissions at West Point.
West point admissions will also direct high quality candidates who need a year of prep to a "civil" prep program.
They use Marion Military Institute in Marion Alabama almost exclusively now - though there are 4 military jr college from you you may choose.

MMI also has a Service Academy Prep program for those who are not "sponsored" by West Point.

Thankyou. I was not aware of MMI. I went to their website and got some good information. It looks like a very good prep school and worth much consideration. I really appreciate all the information and experience you have shared.

Edit: I looked on the MMI site (SAP site) and it does not clarify the duration of the service academy program. Is it 10 months, like USMAPS?

Mike,
Your first step is to open a WP file...they will let you know if you're competitive. If they think you have potential, but don't meet the standard they will communicate with you about prep schools. It is waaaay to early for you to give up and assume you won't get in. You have plenty of time for some EC's....get busy!!!
