Yes it is similar though each has their own nuances and subtle differences.

Weekend liberty is available for all four classes. The extent of this liberty is dependent on class, academic and regimental performance, and Academy obligations. Plebes are the only class not usually granted overnight liberty. In addition to weekend liberty, upperclass midshipmen are provided the opportunity to leave the Academy grounds during the weekday on dinner liberty a number of times each term, again depending on class, academic and regimental performance, and academy obligations.
The Commandant may grant special liberty on a case-by-case basis to allow participation in a special activity that falls outside routine liberty allocations. Official travel (team movements, academic programs, sea year travel, etc.) is issued regardless of class, though it may be subject to academic and regimental standing.
Leave is a form of extended liberty and is generally granted to all classes simultaneously. Midshipmen have a week's leave in November (fall break, following first term), Thanksgiving, during the Christmas/New Year period, March (spring break, following second term), and during the summer. Finally, sick or emergency leave is granted to midshipmen when circumstances warrant.

You can also request leave/liberty on your own for personal reasons. In the old days, you had to fill out a chit and have any professors sign off on it if you were going to miss classes. It was not unheard of to be able to get off for a couple days for family events like graduations and weddings.
The schedule at KP is pretty much a full year schedule so summer break depends on which split and when your ship sails. Other breaks are same for all. DS is a M/N 4th class.. Yes we made it through Plebe to recognition. As is stated in forum be flexible when it comes to KP and that includes Liberty. We are hoping to see DS some before he starts 1st sea year but are prepared not too. (That is this summer)

I think altogether DS got 5 or 6 nights Liberty before recognition. This is different Yvan leave or vacation time. Now they did have opportunities to get off campus during day. Sign
Up for student activities they are great and get kids off campus. However no way around it plebes need to be ready to spend a lot of time at KP. DS is missing his brothers graduation next weekend as had to be at KP for Memorial Day parade part of life..

Did he request a special liberty for this? Although it was many years ago, I got a special weekend liberty to go to my sister's wedding, which was before acceptance day. It would seem Great Neck could survive with one less plebe in the parade, but his brother will only graduate once.

Absolutely agree. The original post was not meant to imply that we expect anything less. I'd much rather leave DS where he is doing what he needs to do. We absolutely get it. No brothers were able to attend oldest son's graduation 2 years ago. From Carnegie Mellon University. Both his brothers were in the midst of finals. I just wanted to let people know there were and are no guarantees where Liberty is concerned. It just seems that some parents are disappointed when DD or DS can't make something. We expect they may well not be able to attend and then are pleasantly surprised when they make it. As in DS made it home for Easter. We had no expectation of him making it and we're thrilled to see him for the holiday. So KP Engineer I couldn't agree more with your statement.
Yup. Even today, working ashore, my job demands take me away from a lot of normal family stuff. It is all part of it and I am compensated. . .
