Hello everybody. I have received an appointment to the USMA Prep School. I have received all the paperwork that must be completed and sent back. I was turned down for a nomination by both of my senaors. Never heard from a representative so I told my recruiter that I was very interested in the prep school. She was constantly telling me I was an excellent candidate for admissions. After receiving myappointment to the prep school friday I have received a phone call from my representative about my request for a nomination. Is this a good sign of getting a direct appointment to USMA? I really love West Point have my heart set on going. Turned down free rides to Ivy League schools to go to West Point. Whether I go through the prep school or straight to USMA makes no difference to me. I just want to go to USMA and commission and serve my country. Just want your thoughts on the matter. Thanks! Go Army!

hate answering questions with questions, but without more information hard to give you any assessemnt

Are your 3Qed? Did you recieve a letter from West Point stating you are full qualified? If so with a nomination, you have a chance getting in. My guess is that you might have been disqualified academically so that's why you got an offer to the Prep school. In general, there are minimum SAT scores and if you don't have them the appropriate academic department will consider your for a wavier. Cases like these if the academic department grants a waiver, you are good otherwise you are academically disqualified. Or you could have failed your CFA (physical).

What di your Congressman's office tell you? The nomination deadline is January 31st, so unless your MOC decides to throw his or her influence around it's too late.

This statement makes me think that he is academically qualified if he has free rides to Ivies, which make this offer to USMAPS interesting since we always think of it as for those who are academically disqualified but strong in all other parts of the file.

Without some further explanation, I'm gonna raise the BS flag on the free ride claim. The big three in the Ivy League don't offer academic scholarships, and tuition assistance is need-based. So...I'm not sure what that claim means.

Personally I have a hard time believing that someone who curried such favor with Ivy League institutions couldn't get a nomination....this story has some big holes in it. Athletics may be involved.

I have spoken with my admissions counselor from Columbia and she said that I was pretty much guaranteed a full ride. I don't know what all that intells or exactly how honest she was being. Also the alumni member from Harvard that interviewd me said that based on what he knows about Harvard and what he had heard from the admissions committee, he siad that I probably wouldn't have to pay for anything.

Couple of months ago my admissions counselor at West Point kept telling me that I was an excellent candidate to get in and was one of the top candidates. She said all I needed to do was land my nomination. I haven't been involved in sports in almost 2 years so maybe that is a factor in my appointment to the prep school. Maybe I wasn't in the best shape as some of the other candidates. I know I not. My reason for having to drop sports was my need to get a job. Now I a work-aholic at the age of 17. I work on average a 35-40 hour work week. While also having the hardest classes at my school, being #1 in my class, and being involved in 9 different clubs, while being the president of 7 and vice-president of the other 2.

I don't know why my representative is just now calling. They left a message on my answering machine. I called back a couple of hours later but the lady had left so I have to call back monday.

Regardless of the reason I didn't get to go straight to West Point and instead have to go to the prep school, I'm still jumping for joy that I am going to West Point. I have fallen in love with this school. If this is my way to go then by God I will go with pride and serve my country non the less. I very proud of myself. To know that only 3 people from my county have ever been to West Point. And that only 1 other has ever been accepted to an Ivy League school is outstanding and says a lot. I am going to the school that I love, and going to serve the country that I love. While also making my parents proud to know that I will be the first in our family to ever go to college, and a world renown university at that. Everone has high expectations for me. I have them for myself. And I have made teachers, family, friends, and my principle proud. Just ready to go to West Point and know that one day I will be apart of the worlds greats army, while learning from and leading the great men and women that serve in it. GOD I LOVE THIS COUNTRY!!!

Congratulations...but good god, president of 7 clubs makes my jaw drop

So.... you have not actually been accepted yet; correct?

It is possible that a lack of athletics can knock you out of being 'qualifed' for a direct appointment. West Point wants their cadets to succeed and athletics is a big part of cadet life. It very well could be that a year at a prep school, where you will integrate team sports with your studies will be beneficial to you.
You need to know the pros and cons - but if you are willing; good luck!

A candidate does not need a nomination to attend a prep program. Those candidate who are in a Prep program must obtain a nomination to receive an appointment.

I aree with scout- some of this story is a bit off.

Scout is right, Harvard doesnt give out scholarships. They will give you a full ride if your parents make under a certain amount, though.

If you got into both Harvard and Columbia, you are certainly impressive. I would think long and hard about giving those schools up for USMAPS.

Prehaps this is what Hampton is refering to? Need-based scholarships and merit-based scholarships both pay for college at the end of the day.
