My s has received a 4yr arotc scholarship, but is trying to obtain a medical waiver. If he is not granted the waiver can he still take ROTC?

Yes, he can sign up and simply take it as a course. Many colleges students do this. However he can't sign a contract or receive his scholarship unless he receives a waiver.

So ,because he was medically disqualified (assuming he does not get the waiver) does that mean he can only take rotc for 2 yrs, and that would be the end of his military career. I assume they wouldn"t let him contract because of the medical DQ. Or after 2 yrs could he try again to get medically qualified.

Correct, if he is unable to receive a medical waiver during the first 2 years of ROTC he would not be allowed to contract and continue to the Advance Course. Without the waiver he cannot commission. During the first 2 years he can work toward getting the waiver, if he does then he can move on.

Thank you all for your help. My thinking is that is that if he does 2 yrs rotc that it will help to show that he is physically fit and capable of performing his duties, and that could help in being granted a waiver.

The rules on medical determination do change periodically. If you cannot get a waiver now, you may be able to get one 2 years from now.

In some cases you need to show that you have been fully recovered from an illness for a certain period of time. After that time has elapsed you may become waiverable.

It's all going to depend on the reason for the DQ. Sometimes they can be removed, sometimes not. Some are never waiverable while some can be waived later on.
I suggest you go to the Dodmerb section and talk to Larry Mullen.
