Transferring Scholarships

I was recently awarded a NROTC 4-year scholarship, but I was assigned to the unit at my #5 school. The big problem, however, is that I did not apply to this school because 1. The application fee is wayyyy to high, and 2. I had already been admitted to my #1 school. I'm beginning to realize now how incredibly stupid this decision was.

So my question is: how difficult is it to transfer a scholarship from the one school to the other? They are similar in tuition cost, if that’s an issue.

Is it still early enough in the process that midshipmen spots will still be open at my #1 school?
And yes, I will be emailing/calling the NROTC office at my #1 to find out for sure.

Is there a chance that I will be able to apply late to my #5 school (I had the application 90% complete, but stopped after being admitted at my first-choice, so my application was recently terminated)
I read that UCLA and some other schools will seek out NROTC scholarship recipients and admit them--maybe something like that could happen with my #5?

Thanks in advance, guys. I really want to be excited about getting this scholarship, but I don’t know if I can yet!

First you have to accept the scholarship if you have not already.

Transfers are not actually looked at until all Navy/Marine/Nurse boards have been placed which is April.

You need to request to have your name put on the waitlist. You can put your name on up to three waitlists. If you have not already call the NROTC unit at your assigned university, ask to speak to the Freshman advisor of the unit. Tell him/her the situation and ask them if they would be able to assist you in applying after the application deadline. If not, don't stress, no promises at getting into your requested units off the waitlist, however, you will be assisted in getting into a unit if you truly want to utilize your scholarship. After all the boards and set numbers are in you can request a list of open units with application due dates.

transferring scholarship

Our DS received an AROTC scholarship to his number 2 school. While a good program, his number 1 school has a major he is interested in that his number 2 does not have. He is accepted at both but the number 1 is out of state and therefore costs quite a bit more. I have several questions:

1. Is a transfer even possible with this kind of scenario?
2. Does he risk losing the scholarship if pursues a transfer?
3. Does CC ever allow a transfer and simply pay up to a certain amount for a more expensive school?
Thanks for any input you can give us.

1. Transfers to higher cost, or from one Brigade to another are problematic...We are still waiting to see exactly what Cadet Command does, since guidance and clear policy seem to be lacking this year. Read the offer letter carefully...I think it will tell you how to go about requesting the transfer.
2. The only way he can loose the scholarship is if he fails to accept it, or doesn't become fully qualified. It can never hurt to ask for something like a transfer.
3. All tuition and fees, or room and board. You choose, so if you are really in the mood to make a deal, you might want to volunteer to use the scholarship for room and board, and pick up the tuition yourself. Since the contract is standard, and not subject to negotiations I'm not sure this would work, because if you gave a verbal agreement to pay the room and board, and then a year from now chose to have the tuition and fees paid, legally Cadet Command would be obligated to honor the contract. I just contradicted myself, didn't I. I think the short answer is No.

All of that is speculation, because the process this year is a little uncertain. What you need to do is talk to the ROO at #1 and at #2. Accept the scholarship, and hope #1 has room and that you are near the top of their OML for applicants. If they want you, if they know you want to come to their Battalion/School they can help get you there.

If there has been a policy shift at CC to award scholarships to only one school and not give the applicant many options, I would expect the requests to transfer to be significantly higher than last year.

FWIW, and I know every year may be different. Last yr (late December)NROTC assigned DS schoarship to #1 school, same day DS received TWE from #1 school. DS accepted scholarship and requested scholarship transfer to #2 school. First week in January DS received confrimation from NROTC scholarship was re-assigned to #2 school.

Accept scholarship, request transfer to school with space or get on wait list that was listed in your top 5. OP advice of contacting freshman adviser was right on. I found it interesting Freshman adviser called DS mid May to confirm DS still planned to attend. He said he was finalizing his list because commitments were changing. So get on the waiting lists ASAP.

Good Luck.

Wait list question

If you place your name on up to three schools on the wait list, do they have to be from within the five that were originally listed on the application or can you wait list at an additional school not previously listed?
TIA-

I'm also in a similar situation. Would CC EVER allow a major change, if it's to a more desirable major from the Army's standpoint so I can attend my first choice (it doesn't have a "mission" to produce commissioning nurses at this time)? If not, what is the likelihood that my transfer request will be granted so I can attend my #2 choice?

2 quick questions:

1. do you have to accept the NROTC scholarship in order to request a transfer, or can this be done prior to accepting the scholarship (I'm still waiting to hear from AF, so I don't necessarily want to commit to Navy yet)

2. Are transfers considered before all the boards have met--I've been given conflicting answers regarding this one.

Thanks!

In all honesty, what you receive on here are going to be opinions on what CC is going to do. Even the ROO's that are on here and extremely generous with their knowledge and their advice do not know your situation or what CC is going to do 100%.

You need to contact CC, you need to talk to them. You also need to contact your #2 choice and see if they can help you in anyway or point in the right direction.

and if you get an answer from Cadet Command please report back, because we would all like to know what CC is thinking.

Ok, I emailed the recruitment office at my assigned unit (Duke U) and was told: "Unfortunately, the application window for Duke is closed and Admissions has already begun reviewing them."

So it looks like that plan's out the window. :frown:

In addition to my 2 questions above, does anyone know how difficult it would be to transfer my scholarship to Notre Dame? The person I talked to said "several students" have been awarded nrotc scholarships to ND, but assuming that some of these students will be rejected from ND, what are my chances of gaining a midshipman spot there?

You can place your name on any school's waitlist, it does not have to be one from your original school choices.

1. Yes you have to accept the scholarship in order to request a transfer. Accepting the scholarship does not obligate you. It reserves the scholarship for you, it you end up not responding, then you eventually have your scholarship offer rescinded. You can always decline later prior to school starting.

2. No transfers are not considered prior to the last board convening. All requests are automatically deferred to the waitlist.

But is there a chance I could be disqualified from the AFROTC scholarship program by accepting the NROTC scholarship? I have not yet heard from AFROTC, and I don't want to lose that opportunity.
Thanks, P-Flying, for your help.

I don't know for sure, but if it works like the Navy no, you will not be disqualified from Air Force ROTC.

No chance. Each ROTC program is separate and they don't compare lists of applicants or acceptances...before May 1st.

My daughter received AROTC & NROTC scholarships in December 2009 and accepted both. Then a month later (end of Jan 2010) received and accepted an AFROTC scholarship. A couple weeks later advised both the AROTC and the NROTC that she was releasing those scholarships. She could have kept all three until at least May 1st but (like most people) chose to help the process by releasing as early as possible the scholarships she knew she wasn't going to use.

My son is in a similar situation this year. My advice is to accept everything and to release scholarships AFTER you are certain of your options and what you want. Good Luck!

ND is my top choice as well for NROTC, but I have't heard back about a scholarship yet so it doesn't look good. I spoke with a Liutenant on campus in the fall about NROTC, and she said that ND almost never fills up completely and that she shoud be contacted is you run into this issue. She mentioned scholarships are usually able to be transferred. message me if you would like her contact info

This Lt you spoke with is incorrect. They are already full. But if selected you can place your name on the waitlist there.

I think maybe the LT was saying that Notre Dame, due to its high selectivity, won't fill up completely, because some of the nrotc scholarship recipients assigned to ND will be rejected by Admissions (which would, of course, re-open those spots).
P-Flying, you seem to have a lot of inside info; are you affiliated with NSTC by any chance? If so, do you have any stats regarding successful nrotc scholarship transfers to ND? Thanks again for your help.
