Hey, so I haven't gotten my Appointment yet, and my file was complete in mid January... I know it's too early to tell if I will/ or will not be appointed, but I want to start creating a contingency plan in case I don't make it. I've already been accepted to BYU, I just need some Ideas on how to round out my application for the class of 2016 if I have to. My application for this year is as follows:

Academic Performance*

GPA: 3.79 Unweighted
Class Rank: 65
Class Size: 460

Test Scores: SAT Verbal/Critical Reading: 600
SAT Math: 660
SAT Writing: 600
ACT English: 27
ACT Math: 31
ACT Reading: 24
ACT SR: 29
ACT Combined English/Writing: 28

Activities:
Church Group Member
Church Group President
National Honor Society Attendee
National Honor Society President
National or State Academic/Science Award
Other Extracurricular Activities
Other Scholastic Awards
Student Body Representative
School Club Officer
Scouting Eagle/Gold Award
Scouting Member
Scouting Senior Patrol Leader
Certified Life Guard/ Math Tutor (up through Calculus AB, I'm in BC)

8 AP classes: Biology, Chemistry, Literature, Language, Government, United States History, Calculus ABC... lol.

Sports:
Football for three years- Captain and Varsity Letter
Track for one year
Golf (try to walk on at the Academy)
Karate for 9 years...
Taken advanced weightlifting classes for three years at my High School.

My GPA is now a 3.82, and will probably be a 3.85 by the end of this year. I really just want to know if I have a legitimate shot at being appointed, and if there are any possible ways to round out my application for next year. I really do appreciate anyone/everyone's time.

Pretty obvious you are qualified. Very strong credentials.

Thank you for your speedy reassurance!

Hey my CFA scores are

Bball toss: 67
Pull ups: 9
Shuttle: 9.4
Situps: 99 (maxed)
Pushups: 55
Mile: 7:17

In your opinion, do you think my mile and pushups will hurt me? I know they are below average, but I figure their just going to run us anyway when we get there. Everyone's mile time is going to dramatically improve during basic. Any suggestions for a good workout plan? I just ordered P90X, but is there something else that would be better? I just really want to hit the ground running at basic, I refuse to fail if I am honored with this chance of a lifetime!

Those scores are so bad. They might be a little "below average," but that is just an average, so you will have people falling below it. You also need to consider your interview, essays, and teacher evaluations for that part of your wcs. If those are strong, your slightly below average scores probably wont matter. But nonetheless, I think that looks pretty strong.

Have you considered ROTC as a fall back plan?

EDIT: Also, how many volunteer hours do you have?

I'd try and take a standardized test again if possible. A last minute one got me a falcon foundation scholarship last year (appointed this year). Pullups and the mile are the most important parts of the CFA according to my prep school director. Other than that, it looks like a GREAT app. Best of luck

Hey thank you very much for your everyone's insight! I'll apply to the BYU ROTC just in case.

Pullups and the mile are the most important parts of the CFA according to my prep school director.

It's not so much that they're more important than other events in a way that they'd be worth more total points. Every event is scored and added, a max score is worth the same points on every event. The pullups and mile just have more significant point increases for a small change in the number of pullups or run time. It's a more bang for your buck thing. And mile is important to the academy because of the altitude.

Yes, that makes sense. I wish I could go back and redo my CFA... but I'm working out now, at least I won't be in physical shock if I do get appointed. Thanks for your help, I really do appreciate it.

When did you take the CFA? Just curious because online application for 2016 has only been open for a little over a week

I took the CFA on January 11th. Since then I have been doing the P90X workout routine, I'll bet my scores will be off the charts if I have to apply for the class of 2016. I definitly should've been doing this a long time ago. I'm not too worried about my scores, I just want to see how I stack up with others you know? I need some confidence, or some brutal realization that my plan B may have to be activated.

Haha! thanks! when I read that I was a little nervous, I was hoping you were being ironic. lol. Well I just got put on the Wait List for the USMA, my 2nd choice. I'm a little worried, because I thought that the Air Force Academy was more competitive. However, my ALO mentioned that since the USMA was my 2nd choice, they may have given it to another qualified candidate who had tallied it as his/her number one choice. That said, if that was not the case, than this year's class is going to be insanely competitive. I'm coming right out of high school, I wonder how many people from college applied this year. Any one know where I can find that?

You can't really find that info right now. You will be able to find it when they release the class make up after everyone is there, but for now, the answer would be no.

Mainly because just like hs students college kids must fight for noms too. A college kid could be on your slate for all you know.

I am not sure I am following your ALO's belief because if the MOC used competitive and you both had USMA, you both went up against each other and highest WCS wins it. The AFA packet does not see how you racked and stacked your nom requests.

Now if your MOC submitted the slate not using competitive than could be the case.

Also, even if a college student is on the slate, it still comes down to WCS if they use competitive.

I would look into the MOC method that they used for your slate. Ex: if they submitted Principal, that is why you didn't get it if you weren't the prin.

My slate doesn't have a prin. nomination. I just hope the AFA wants me, I really don't WANT to do this process again, but DEFINITELY will do it again if I have to. This opportunity is too great to pass up.

Ottorpop, our MOC posted the names and current school/college of all of his nominees for all of the SA's on his congressional website. Not sure if this is the norm, but if your MOC did that you can at least see the slate! Good luck!

Thanks! looks like I just have to play the waiting game for the AFA now... come on Falcons! GIVE ME A CHANCE! PLEASE!
