I've completed a semester of Duel Enrollment English 1010, am taking English 1020, and have a 5 for my AP U.S. History Exam. What do I need to do to get the credits for these? What would AP U.S. History cover (I assume Modern American History)? I'm hoping I can knock out my English to lighten up my second trimester duing Plebe year and want to pursue the Nuclear Engineering Minor in place of my other English, History (hopefully) and my electives.

I am pretty sure that you still have to take all the courses regardless of previously earned credits.

In my view, probably one of the most important features of the KP program is giving the cadets more things to accomplish than time allows. If anything, those that make it through tend to be pretty good at prioritizing and time management.

Everyone has to do four years in residence and you can't get advanced standing, but you can credit for previous college coursework. See someone in the registrars office once classes start. I would suggest going to all your classes and wait a week for the initial chaos to settle down, then take all your stuff to the registrar and they will give you the whole scoop.

Provide the Registrar with a transcript of the courses you took as well as a course outline and you should be able to get out of English and/or Modern American History. The Humanities Department Head will have to sign off on it. Depending on the grade you got in the course, you may or may not get out of it. Also be aware that you can only be exempt from a maximum of six credits during your time here.

OK, I'll take the Modern American History and put the credits in my English classes. I was thinking of taking Public Speaking and Technical Writing in place of English I, anyone have any experience in that class?

You do realize that just because a class is listed in the catalog doesn't mean you can take it whenever you want, right?

One, you have to have enough people to offer the class, and two, the professor that teaches it needs to be available.

To be honest my recommendation is to take those AP/advanced credits and toss 'em in the "glad to have the background" bucket and take the normal classes. The last thing you want to do at KP is get yourself into a situation where you are needing to take harder classes.

Right, there are probably plenty of people at the school who got 5s on 5 or 6 AP exams.

Consider it as good preparation and plan on helping your friends that weren't exposed to the material in high school. You will be good at some stuff and your friends will be good at other stuff.

Not to be a nit picker, but I do find it particularly ironic when one writes of exempting English classes yet somehow missed the difference between "duel" and "dual". Consistenly enough so that it isn't a typo. . . .

I think we actually call it "Duel" Enrollment down here, I'll have to check. It is the way some of us Tennessee people speak down here.

My kid took both of those classes as well. The thought of taking them again is welcome!

Yeah, the guy who gets shot fails the class.

I know I plan to take the AP Calculus test, but I was planning to take it again at the academy anyway, just to refresh and squeeze some more details out of it.

Calculus at KP is nothing like AP Calc. You will now be moving at the speed of light. You will take an entire yr. of AP in one trimester. They will put you in various calc classes depending on your ability. If I were you, take it 4 days per week. If you get in the 3 day a week class, ask to be moved to the slower class. It will save you a lot of heartache later. And get familiar with Cramster, a huge help in trying to see how problems are solved both in Calc and Physics. Kahn academy is good too. Don't assume you know this material before you get to KP. It's so much harder here.

OK, how do I get the four hour Calc class? I'm good with math, but I'd really like to get a refresh on that Calculus. Who/what is "Cramster" and "Kahn academy?"

My DD had six AP classes coming in to KP (including Calc and two English), she was able to get credit for English 1 and that is it. She was very thankful for the knowledge she had from taking the AP classes, which helped tremendously in the classes she was required to take. Be thankful for the additional knowledge it will be very useful as you "retake" the classes. You will defintely have an edge on others and like her may be utilized for tutoring. Best wishes to you!!

NAUTILUS...to repost what KP2001 said........you do realize you will have very little choice in what class/classes you take? After you declare either Deck or Engine as your major (sometime in first trimester of plebe year), basically all your classes will be scheduled out through your senior year.

The only choice my son had was in some electives, pistol, sailing, scuba, and what his minor would be. The only majors that get to choose a minor are the Systems Engineers, and, with that said, not all the minors are offered each year and they are based on number of Mids who want to take them, and the availability of professors.

My advice to you....get all the high level classes you can in high school and make it through first trimester plebe year. baby steps kiddo!

You should be able to validate English 1 with a 5 on the AP exam. I believe that they will have you write an essay and do an interview in order to do this. However, I am not 100% positive.

In catalog, systems engineering shows minors or "electives" such as mechanical engineering; electrical engineering, LNG; Off shore engineering.? if not all classes are offered each year, how does one determine which specialty to minor in?
