I will be in ROTC this fall at North Georgia and cant wait to start :shake: So I have a quick question about training while apart of ROTC. If you are apart of ROTC can you take part in summer school training like Airborne or others. Is this only possible if you are a "contracted" cadet or on a Army ROTC scholarship?
Thanks to anyone in advance.

Yes you have to be contracted for Airbourne school. You also have to be standout and maintain good grades. My son's school only send kids with a college GPA of over 3.0, preferably over 3.5, to Airbourne.

* edit knowing the inconsistency of the information from ROO's the above will need clarifying. Marist, CLarkson, please jump in/

I don't know exactly how NGCSU goes about giving their slots out, but I know that other schools allow cadets to either be contracted/scholarship or seeking with the intent of commissioning. The reason they would give a seeking cadet a slot would be in hopes of "hooking them in" for commissioning. To piggy back what FloridaDad mentioned; make sure you have a good GPA as well as outstanding PT scores. It varies in how difficult the level of competition will be due to the school and program size. It could range from 12-15 people trying to get a Airborne slot at FSU where a PT score of 245 will get you something to 185 cadets in just the MS2 level at VMI competing for a school slot and your scores have to be above 290. Also, the better the program and instructors the better the chances for getting more slots and schools. The ones that I know of that are open to ROTC cadets are:

Airborne
Air Assault
Helo training for about 1.5 months
CFT at USMA
Mountain Warfare
Pre-Sapper
CLDT
Combat Diver at the JFKSWC

Good luck with everything and try to stay focused.

I didn't know AROTC cadets could do Combat Diver. That is something my son would be very interested in.

At our battalion we typically get 8 Airborne slots per Summer. The slots typically go to the top MSI, the top 5 MSIIs, and the top 2 MSIIIs. The bottom line is if you are in the top 15% of your year group, it will be offered to you at some point. If not, you only get it if someone else turns it down.

A lot will depend on the batallion you are in. Marist stated that they give an Airborne slot to the top MS1 at their batallion. My son's batallion does not give slots to MS1's, only MS2's and MS3's that can fit it around LDAC. Each batallion will be different.

FloridaDad is correct, you need to be at the top of your game. My son's batallion uses the in school OML which is based on GPA, PT score, Cadre points, and overall performance in ROTC. If your #1 then you get the first choice and so on down the list.

Try your best, my son went to Airborne last year and had a blast, this year he is #1 on the OML again and has selected to do CTLT with the 82nd Airborne at Ft. Bragg after LDAC. Remember, hard work does pay off, and everything is a competition.

If you choose to do SMP you can sometimes get slots through your Guard or Reserve unit.

Good luck next fall.

How many contracted cadets do you have in total? and how many combat diver slots are available?

I think that you will find that there are very few Combat Diver slots available in any given year. West Point and SMC seem to have the best shot at these. My son's batallion can't even find in their records the last time a cadet from his school went to Combat Diver, my son asked, that is until he saw the Combat Diver School documentry on the Military Channel, he swims well....just not that well. Again each batallion is different.

Since I've been here at VMI including this year we will have sent two cadets at the MSII level to Combat Dive School. We have another doing the pretests and if he succeeds he will go as well. So in all we have obtained three slots in two years. I'm assuming that the slots have always been there, but the cadre have either never had anyone up to the challenge or the cadets were not as interested. The guy from last year I believe lasted 3 or 4 weeks in and then was dropped. Quite an accomplishment seeing how he wasn't an NCAA swimmer and just 19-20 years old. The guy guaranteed a slot this year was a NCAA swimmer and now participates in Triathlons; so you can see the level of shape you'd have to be in.

I couldn't agree more. I haven't heard of any other schools getting to go to Combat Diver or Pre-Sapper even after speaking with my buddy at USMA.

Woah, I did not know there was a helicopter training summer program through ROTC. Do you know how competitive it is?

I believe it's anywhere from 1-1.5 months. I don't remember too many of the details that our instructors briefed us on it. I believe it's going to be held somewhere out West, but can't be sure. I'm not sure on how competitive it is, but I know a guy in my class was trying to go, but couldn't either due to not passing the AFAST or didn't get selected. I believe the one guy we're sending is a MSIII.

I have been watching the military channel program on the combat diver training. It seems many have more problems with diving, equipment and the stress situations they use than endurance.

What does MSIII mean?
