Hi, I have seen that some of the candidates have been given appointments to both the USMA and USNA. Have you decided which one you will attend? Could you tell us why? If you have not chosen yet, when will you? My DS has been triple qualified for both and nominated to both and is anxiously awaiting replys from either school.

Hey, I have not been appointed to either (I am a Junior...) but I had a question... why does it seem that so many people are triple qualified here? (Read: not double, not quadruple, triple)

I found it actually funny... :)

Whichever your "DS" chooses when she gets her acceptance letters, I hope "it" excels!

(Sorry, I don't know what "DS" means... Everyone here says that... lol)

DS - means Darling Son or Dear Son. Same thing with DD - Dear Daughter.

3'd - means triple qualified. Scholastically, physically and medically with DodMerb.

Im sorry but this is a random question..
How do you determine if you are academically qualified?
i understand that you can pass the CFA which makes you physically qualified and passing the DoDMERB means that you're healthy and qualified in that area as well..

You can't determine if you're academically qualified, the admissions board does. They lookat your class rank, GPA, strength of classes taken, test scores. To be physically qualified, besides passing the CFA, they also looks at sports participation.

BillSL, you need to be triple qualified in order to be appointed.

Original question - I was appointed to both but really only applied to USNA to placate my parents. I chose USMA because I want to be in the Army, not the Navy.

I'm leaning towards Army because I don't want to be in the Navy. The only reason I'd go to USNA is to become an officer in the Marine Corps. And of course, it's not a guaranteed slot. So if i didn't earn it, I would be in the Navy, which I don't want to be in.

Thanks jlvk and AKH (nice names, guys!)

I thought 3Q'ed meant you had 3 times the points you required to be admitted. Silly me :)

An officer in the Marine Corps is great, but if I get accepted, I'm shooting on becoming a Naval Special Warfare officer (preferably SEALs).

I've been rigorously training for BUD/s for about 3 years and if I don't get accepted into the Academy, I probably will go through BUD/S as an enlisted sailor.

Academy- Pro: Best place to prepare future officers for BUD/S.
If you have some minor medical gliches preventing you from SEAL training(such as eyesight) the Academy will fix it and handle the paperwork efficiently.
Con: As officers, you only have ONE chance to pass BUD/S. (If one gets hurt or sick, he can never retake BUD/s.

Enlisted - Pro: 3 chances to take BUD/s

Initially, I was gung ho for the Marines. Hence, USNA was my choice for a very long time. I was the opposite of AKH. I applied to USMA to shut my parents up. After going on an overnight visit, however, I began to feel conflicted about my choice.

The Army had more MOSs, was more likely to let you change your MOS if you didn't like it and had MOSs that seemed to be more marketable for the civilian world after my military career. The Army also seemed to be a lot more willing to let females go outside the wire, so to speak. Plus, West Point offered more majors.

In short, the visit (and a lot of prayer) made me realize that West Point and the Army offered me more choices, which I consider important when talking about my future. Now, though still open to the USNA route, I am heavily leaning towards West Point.
