I have questions about West Point's equestrian team. Can you be a recruited athlete? Does they count that as you sport? I know you have to play a sport at the SA's. Any other info would be helpful too!

I have a friend whose cadet left a team she was recruited for to join equestrian...it is a sport. She is loving it!

Yep, counts as a sport! I'm interested in trying out for the team, too. I hear it's slightly competitive because it's not a team with many spots...20 or so people make up the team, if I recall my facts correctly. Members of the team range from people who have ridden competitively for many years to those who have only ridden a horse a time or two.

As I am not currently a cadet, that's about all of the info I can give you regarding the equestrian team...I am simply interested in the equestrian team as well!

Are you an accepted candidate as well?

I haven't tried getting an appointment to WP yet, I'm just interested and want more info. What about you?

What's funny is that I was watching Spirit when I came across this thread... Being an equestrian at West Point would be awesome.

Two of the current team members are from Washington (I know their parents well through the parents club). I'll see if I can get answers to some of your questions.

Here is a link to the team's website:
http://usmahorse.com/default.aspx.

More information from the parents of two current members of the team:

"USMA does not recruit equestrians. Tryouts are after the academic year starts annually. Advise applicant to research IHSA (like NCAA for equestrians)."

Hope this helps.
