Schools that lower tuition for type 7 recipients

I live in Maine, and unfortunately we only have one school where I can use my Type 7 AFROTC scholarship and it's a crosstown school. I am beginning to research other schools where I could potentially use my scholarship. I know that West Virginia University covers in state tuition and room & board for type 7 out of state cadets. I also know that University of Kentucky does the same. It looks like University of Portland might as well, does anyone know for sure if they do for type 7 winners?

Also, does anyone know any other schools that I haven't mentioned?

Contact the detachments at the schools as soon as possible. They know the ins and outs of both the admissions and finacial aid offices. DS's detachment was extremely helpful,
 
I was under the impression that the university you want to use your type-7 ROTC Scholarship had to be in the state you're from... :confused:

You cannot use a Type 7 scholarship out of state, but you can convert it to a 3 Year Type 2 Scholarship. (You do ROTC as a freshman, but no scholarship or stipend the first year. Then the scholarship kicks in when you are a sophomore as long as you are still medically qalified.)

My son is taking a look at the University of Portland next week, so here is what we know so far.

With a 3 year Type 2 they will give you a room and board grant the first year, but you would be responsible for the tuition (something like $36k). Once the ROTC scholarship kicks in, they give you a room and board scholarship and a grant that covers the difference in tuition, so other than personal expenses you are completely covered for years 2-4.

In my son's case, UP also offered him a Presidential Scholarship which would cover about half of the first year's tuition. So I would think that they may have other scholarships available.

Anyway, your best bet is to give them a call, describe your situation, and see what they can tell you.

Seems like a ROTC friendly school -- about 20% of the students do ROTC.

Think I've heard that Baylor also has a pretty ggod deal for AFROTC students.

This is incorrect. A Type 7 can be used at any state university that has an AFROTC Detachment (or cross-town arrangement) and that will charge the AFROTC scholarship awardee tuition at the in-state rate. There might be a $18K max limit per year though.

Unfortunately (but not surprisingly) not many public universities are willing to lower their tuition rates for OOS students to the same level as their in-state students. I believe that WVU does this because they know that AFROTC scholarship students almost always have stats that are substantially higher than the general admit at WVU.

From the AFROTC subsidy list:
"West Virginia University offers out-of-state Type 2 and 7 AFROTC high school scholarship winners a tuition waiver for any costs that exceed the amount of the AFROTC Scholarship. Additionally, all incoming AFROTC high school scholarship winners receive a room and board scholarship consisting of a double-occupancy room and a 19-meal plan, for as long as the student maintains their AFROTC scholarship and the student lives on campus."

Agagles is correct.

It is up to the school to determine whether to take the OOS as an IS student re: tuition.

Again, look at the list, but contact the school. With our economy in the tanks, and state schools being funded by their state, they are tightening their wallets and may elect to change their position on this issue.

I thought WVU twist was interesting... as long as they live on campus. For most colleges freshman are guaranteed housing, but not upper grads...that would mean you could get hurt financially if they do not live on campus.

I have said it before will say it again the devil is in the details.

Just saying, for both of my kids, only freshman yr was guaranteed, so look into the school re: housing, because if you elect to move off campus, it would appear to me that you would have to convert to a type 2, and I would never recommend anyone trying to switch horses mid-stream when it comes to scholarships.

My son took his type 7 to wvu as an oos student. The tuition was reduced to 9000.00 to qualify. They also provide free room and board as long as you stay on campus. If you move off campus, your on your own. My son will be a junior and is moving off campus so it is on me now. Hard to tell a junior to stay in a dorm with freshman.
 
I am confused DS received a 4 year AROTC and is trying to transfer it out of state. He has already called the admissions office at the school he wants to transfer to and they said nothing about having to pay the first year. Can someone help me? Every time:confused: we call the AROTC at the school he wants to transfer to he leaves a message and no one calls back. Is there a number for AROTC headquarters? thanks!

My DS received offer to only one school (awardees received more offers to multiple schools from the October board than from the January board). Note that the offer comes from AROTC Cadet Command, not from the ROTC unit at any particular school. Here is the relevant portion of the text of the memo that went out to AROTC cadre a couple of weeks ago concerning transfer (more information can be found in this thread http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/...ad.php?t=18442).

Scholarship winners need to be reminded that the ROTC battalions cannot approve a request to transfer their scholarship offer to another school.

Please have any scholarship winner who wishes to submit a request for change coordinate directly with the appropriate Scholarship Program Manager listed below at Headquarters Cadet Command.

Before a request to change can be considered, the scholarship winner needs to:


1. Accept the original offer. If the original offer is declined or withdrawn, the offer no longer exists.


2. State in a letter or an email which school they are requesting to transfer their offer.


3. Send a copy of the university acceptance letter. The applicant must be accepted to the university they are requesting to change their offer.
