Well, I just received my appointment yesterday:smile: and was wondering if midshipmen were allowed to have laptops at the Naval Academy.

congrats!
pretty sure that they are issued to you. (at least that is the way they are at the USAFA). i went to the AFA and everyone had the same computer, so i asked.....

Last year the plebes were issued netbooks and desktops.

There are any number of threads on this topic. You may want to search them out.

My son was told by the USNA candidate advisor that he could show up in his underwear and USNA would provide everything else. Funny how certain memories stick. Bring a cCell phone, if you have one.

You are getting ready to take a trip back to the Dark Ages as far as internet access is concerned. Your local community college has better connectivity than the Naval Academy. It's truly puzzling.

Typically, the academy only issues DESKTOPS. These desktops are connected directly to the academy's network via ethernet. They also issue you a netbook, but most midshipmen say that it is only good as a door jam. They are seldom used and they cannot receive wireless from any network other than the Naval Academy's - and the Naval Academy has no wireless network that is accessible from within Bancroft Hall (dormitory).

SIDENOTE: You'll also discover that your cellphone will seldom work within Bancroft Hall. It's like a nuclear bunker.

It is forbidden that any Mac's be connected to the Naval Academy's network.

Even with an ethernet cable, you cannot connect just any computer. It has to be specially configured. It is also forbidden to connect a flashdrive to a USB port.

In short, DO NOT bring a laptop with you on I-Day.

My roommate has his own laptop here. You're free to have one AFTER plebe summer. Have your parents bring it to PPW. You probably won't get any internet access with it, unless you buy a card for Sprint or AT&T. Some people have found that to work. The net books they gave us work OK at best.
