Hello, I was informed a few days ago that I have recieved a 4 yr Navy option scholarship to my first choice college. I am thrilled, however, I just checked my Dodmerb status (I check it pretty much daily because I have been awaiting an eye waiver to USNA) and there was a new addition to the list; here's what it said...

Agency: US Navy ROTC
Admission Status Change Date: 25-FEB-2008
Current Medical Status: Disqualified (as of 25-FEB-08 )
Code Description
(Code 1) (Description 1)
(Code 2) (Description 2)

My medical status for USNA says "Pending Waiver/Submission Review" as of today as well. So is this the END of the road for my NROTC scholarship? I mean I just found out about it last Friday...was it all too good to be true?

you should repost this on the dodmerb forum on this website. there is one person who used to work for dodmerb who is awesome with answers to such questions.

Just checked my status this morning...medical status changed:

Agency: US Navy ROTC
Admission Status Change Date: 25-FEB-2008
Current Medical Status: Pending Waiver Submission/Review (as of 26-FEB-08 )

My BGO for USNA said that the school I recieved the scholarship for would be the ones making the decision about my waiver. I read in another forum on here that waiver authorities for NROTC/USNA are the same. So is it the seperate school that I need to talk today to in order to clarify my status, or the waiver authorities at USNA?

Thanks for any help/support!

OK, I'm going to reply here, but also ask a Super Moderator (as my special powers do not extend outside of the DoDMERB section!!) to move this thread to the DoDMERB section.

Here is what happened, you were first entered into the DoDMERB system for USNA. You were found disqualified and your file was forwarded to the waiver authorities for review. The day your file is reviewed and you are found disqualified your medical status is "Disqualified". That night when your file is electronically forwarded to the waiver authorities your medical status changes to "Pending Waiver Submission/Review".

You were then entered into the DoDMERB system for NROTC. You happened to see it the day your NROTC file was reviewed and you were found disqualified for NROTC, hence the medical status of "Disqualified". Now it is the next day and you see the medical status of "Pending Wiaver Submission/Review". You file was forwarded to the waiver authorities last night.

Most of the BGO's do not know how the medical process works, and that is not to put them down, it is just a fact of life. You are correct that the waiver authorities for USNA and NROTC are the same. The fact that you have been offered an NORTC scholarship (congrats for that!) means that your file will be reviewed for a waiver for NROTC in the next 3 to 8 weeks.

For the waiver authorities to review your file for USNA, USNA admissions needs to tell the waiver authorities to review your file for them, and they will do that when they have identified you as an applicant they may offer an appointment to.

So at this point in time all you need to do is sit back, relax and wait for a waiver decision. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask away.

I just PMed jamzmom to ask if she would move this over to the dodmerb forum.

NavyHM-Thanks for the clarification! Here's a bit more to my puzzle...I have actually been "Pending Waiver Submission/Review" for the Naval Academy since 3 July 2007. Since I know that the waiver authorities for the NROTC and the Academy are the same, does this mean that when I finally get waived for one program, I will be waived for the other? I guess it would make sense since its all Navy (oorah!).

Like I said, I have not been waived or denied since July and I take that as a hopeful sign that they are keeping an eye on my file (both NROTC and USNA completed in Nov/Dec). Either that or I must have been WAY at the bottom of the stack. Months ago, my optometrist sent in documents addressing my eye DQ, and I sent in a personal statement addressing my other DQ. I am not aware of anything else that will help press my case. Would calling the respective NROTC unit where I was assigned to with the scholarship help at all? Better yet, my dad and I are planning to make a personal appearance and meet the staff later this week (6+ hour road trip). It would be amazing to have this option open to me if I don't get an appointment to the Academy...just have to sort out this mess first!

From a waiver standpoint, the NROTC detachment has no say in the matter, and most do not have the waiver authority contact information. Obviously visiting the detachment will be a great experience for you, and also letting them know that you are waiting on a medical waiver will let them know where you are in the process.

As for your USNA file pending waiver since July 2007, that is because USNA admissions has not told the waiver authorities to review your file yet. As I stated previously, the waiver authorities will not review your file until USNA admissions tells them to. Since you have been offered an NROTC scholarship the waiver authorities will review your file for only NROTC. They are the same folks, but different sections review for the different programs.

I sent an email to NavyHM specifying the type of eye waiver and skin waiver needed.

Thanks again jamzmom! Just wondering, am I not able to initiate a PM because I am a new member?

Killer, you should be able to send and receive private messages. I sent you a pm just now with further directions. Let me know if all is well.

How would you read this? If status is......

Current Medical Status: "Pending Waiver/Submission Review"

last entry under 'event' is

30-JAN-08 Date exam reviewed ......

What's been happening since Jan 30?

Is this considered the 3-8 week waiting period?

Or is some follow up in order?

MB530,

It all depends on what program you are applying for, as there are different processes for waivers. Please provide me the program you are applying for and I can provide you the correct answer.

Quick question...
If you don't get a waiver from USNA, is it over or can you go back to USNA and ask for them to look at it again or do you then need to try and get the DG removed from DodMerb? And if you don't find out until the last minute or final hour do you wait for next year?
Just getting prepared but not worried :)

If you want to get the disqualification removed, now is the time. Once a waiver has been granted or denied, DoDMERB will not remove the disqualification (unless it is a time limited disqualification).

If a waiver is denied for this class year, it is possible to get it waived for next year, if you re-apply.

If your waiver is granted close to I/R-day then it is possible to also get an appointment at the last minute (or a conditional appointment pending clearance of medical).

Have a LOA subject to medical waiver..will that buy me time?

Great news...hoping I don't need the extra time...
Thanks for you sharing your knowledge....

RetNavyHM:

Here is the info.
Again, last entry under 'event' is
30-JAN-08 Date exam reviewed

Agency: US Navy ROTC
Admission Status Change Date: 14-FEB-2008
Current Medical Status: Pending Waiver Submission/Review (as of 30-JAN-08 )

Agency: US Naval Academy SubAgency: NALOA
Admission Status Change Date: 14-JAN-2008
Current Medical Status: Pending Waiver Submission/Review (as of 13-FEB-08 )

Can DodMERB be reviewing a DQ at the same time the waiver board is looking at it? There is some evidence to believe the DQ may be changed but it's impossible to tell which team has the ball.

Anytime DoDMERB receives new information they will review it regardless of what status your file is currently at. So yes, they will review to see if they can remove the disqualification. If they can not, they will forward it to the waiver authorities. Unfortunately there are some limitation on the DoDMERB web site so you really can not tell what has happened. Your best bet to get the information you are looking for would be to call DoDMERB and ask.

What is the standard time frame the waiver authorities take to make a decision. The woman at USNA told me that I had an LOA and was waiting on that waiver (dealing with allergy shots from 5 years ago). According to DODMERB my exam was reviewed yesterday, and I can't help but wonder the average time to hear anything. I know nothing is absolute when it comes to this stuff, but any idea would help calm my nerves some. Thanks:smile:

The average time is between 3 to 8 weeks from the date the information was forwarded by DoDMERB to the waiver authorities.
