Class of 2015 - Mailbox Stalkers Club

I guess I should be happy to see that others are getting calls and knowing it's finally starting. But it makes the waiting that much more stressful when your kids hasn't received a call yet.

Couldn't agree with you more:frown:

I know! I called our MOC's office today and left a VM asking them to call me just to let me know if our MOC's procedure is to phone those who are admitted OR if he lets the AFA do the job. Did not get a call-back today but I am confident that they will phone me tomorrow as they are very responsive. So, now I get to answer a call tomorrow (most likely) from the office of the MOC and gasp! will it be THE call or just the call-back. Why did I do that! !!!!!! ahhhh!!!!! :)

I know exactly how you feel. I'm in the same boat. At least the process is starting, so either way, the wait will be over soon.

Even if you don't get accepted, don't be too worried. I had a long path before I could get accepted. I graduated high school in 2008. When I applied directly out of high school, my application didn't really get anywhere. I was nowhere near competitive. Discouraged, I just enrolled in a normal local college. No ROTC or anything like that, the school didn't offer it. Anyway, it wasn't until my mom was laid off from her job later in 2008 that I started to really worry. I had done the Summer, and Fall semesters, and was already registered for Spring. We couldn't get accepted for school loans anymore, and since she was laid off in October, FAFSA just looks at the final year totals, so I didn't qualify for federal aid. What that meant for me was I was dropping out of school. That was when I started doing some research and found the Montgomery GI bill. So, I enlisted. After all the paperwork was signed, I saw that there was an opportunity for enlisted airmen to receive an appointment to the academy. From that point on, I did everything I could to be a model airman. I volunteered for things like Habitat for Humanity in Mississippi to help out with the aftermath of Katrina, Leadership position in our job training school, etc. It was my goal on the first day of basic to get an appointment into this school. Just because they tell you no once, doesn't mean you can't work to make yourself a better candidate. If you get denied, take it with pride. Talk to your ALO and ask what areas you can improve on. Take some classes at a community college to build some of your academic abilities. Now, I've been out of high school for three years, I am just now getting an appointment to the prep school. Don't fret over a TWE, just look at is as a new challenge to overcome!

It has been my goal since 2006, my cousin's graduation from the academy, to be in that exact spot one day. To be able to throw my cap up in the air as the Thunderbirds fly overhead. I never would have thought that it would come ten years later.

My wife looked at me today and said YOU'RE A BIT STRESSED today.

You are my hero, jwalsh1! And how very kind and humble of you to share your path to the AFA with all of us. My DS has already been accepted to his 2nd choice and has signed up for AFROTC etc. and will be undeterred to re-apply in the Fall. In fact, all of our MOC's principle noms are current college freshman who are in their respective ROTC's so that should make all "TWE recipients" feel a little better! And, as has been stated numerous times on this thread.....everyone who is now waiting is ALREADY a winner!

And, since we're lamenting here....tonite my son is at his last scout meeting, as he turns 18 tomorrow and that officially ends Boy Scouts. :( Lot's of milestones these past few months, and more to come. It was MUCH easier to send DD off to college! :)

"How they got there will have little meaning"

As they say in Facebook-land, Falconfamily, I "like" this!

Thats an awesome story, Jwalsh. Thanks for sharing. I definitely plan on attending georgia tech on an AFROTC scholarship and reapplying as soon as possible if I am not given an appointment.

Yes, I am the wife and I did do that.

Our DS got a call tonight... but from another college that he had applied to. I walked slowly into the office only for him to say "it's not them, it's not them". He is a little bit more uptight now.:frown:

Just remember that the machinery has just started moving...there are weeks of this before the class is formed. Try to keep that in perspective. All of us are pulling for you guys!

truly inspiring!!!

to jwalsh1: You are truly inspiring! Thank you for sharing!

I've been following this thread for weeks now; it's comforting to know that I am not the ONLY one who "jumps when the phone rings", "stalks the mailman", and makes myself absolutely insane trying to figure out the "how", "if" and "when" it might happen! Thank you to all of you for the reassurance that I'm really not the ONLY one!

And, I do agree, our children truly are winners, no matter what the outcome of the USAFA process! We are all blessed!

Thank you so much! Right now I feel very sad. I know this is a long way from over, but he has worked so hard. I'm trying to be positive and not let my concerns show to DS. At the very least he was accepted to a very good school and has receive an AFROTC scholarship too. One way or another he will become an officer in the US Air Force!:thumb:

Mattsmom2015, don't feel sad! We still have a good shot AND look on the bright side...we can now add "Mailbox Stalkers Club" to our list of memberships on our resume! And by God, this is a VERY exclusive club! :)

Wow, reading this thread brings back so many emotions from last year! I remember the principal at my son's high school allowed him to carry his cell phone in school with permission to answer any call from his senator or congressman...no matter what, no matter when! It was such a crazy time!
(He receive his appointment, just finished recognition, and is now in Hawaii for spring break with his squadron! This summer he will be flying gliders. It is a torturous journey at times, but it has its perks!) :thumb:
Hang in there!

It's not over...

Vamom and mattsmom....stay positive. I feel frustrated too; my DS has worked like crazy as well! I'm sure they all have! We have to stay focused and positive for their sakes!

DS's Plan B is an excellent, outstanding option and something to be very proud of... These kids are unbelievable people! They will be successful no matter what road they take to pursue their dreams!

Hoping the wait is over soon....

Notification

So everyone is talking about receiving phone calls from their MOC.

For those who have only a Presidential nomination, will those candidates still be notified by the MOC (even if they did not apply to that congressman.)

Or will the candidate need just to stalk the mailbox, every single day.

Vamom-
If he is like most scouts I have had the pleasure to know (especially Eagles), it is hardly his last meeting. As far as remaining registered, he can always keep registered as an adult leader as long as it is done with the understanding he will help when he comes home and as time permits. He can also keep a registration as a Venturing member until 21. One of my "boys" got his Eagle, joined Venturing, and is now a Ranger in Afghanistan. He still attends activities when he comes home and the troop and crew sends him care packages for his unit every 3 months (last shipment was well over 100 pounds and was given to everyone in his unit....they all know us well by now...)

I was checking Facebook early this morning and...

...the Academy Admissions page had posted this: "Good Morning everyone! Just a heads up Appointments are being mailed out so keep and eye out!"

But within a short time that status was taken down. So, maybe someone wasn't supposed to post that info! But I had copied it already to send to my kids. (as if they weren't in full mailbox stalking mode as it is.)

So, as many people here already suspect, the bulk of regular appointments is going out, probably to reach many homes by the end of the week.

Exciting, stressful times. BUT, as many here also know, including me, a "no" doesn't have to mean "no." Never give up!

wshilton, I don't know the answer to your question:re "will those candidates be notified by the MOC".....but I can tell you that, by studing these threads like a Rhodes Scholar, I DO know that not all MOC's make a phone call. So in the end, it's a week's difference between a phone call from the MOC and/or the BFE. In the scheme of life, a week is insignificant. In the scheme of waiting, I know it's a lifetime! Good luck to you!

Yes, every day. Maybe twice a day. :) That's the downside to a presidential. The upside is you may hear quicker because you are told directly as opposed to waiting for the MOC to get around to it.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I checked around with people who received appointments for other service academies, and I found that my senator writes to their candidates instead of calling. Going to be a loooooong week.
